Success in the movies is measured in Box Office statistics; a crude calculus of audience figures that omits the impact and ideological consequences of contemporary film. In Avatar(2009), the most successful film of all time, the body is a highly politicized space, where issues of power and control are narrated; surveillance is endorsed by the powerful elite as a method of control and regulation. The characters’ need to self-regulate, and as such be effective members of the population, reflect Foucault’s ‘bio-power’. Meanwhile the audience is ideologically regulated by the editing choices of the film makers; the protagonist is cast as essentially in need of repair and cast as a sub-optimal human. An analysis of the editing choices exposes a critically ‘ableist’ perspective; the editorial choices reflect a view of ‘sub-optimal’ bodies as terminally un-able.

영화의 성공은 박스 오피스 통계로 측정된다. 그러나 이는 현대 영화의 이데올로기적 결과를 생략한 관객 단위의 수치일 뿐이다. 영화 <아바타>(2009)에서 몸은 힘과 통제의 문제가 묘사됨으로써 고도의 정치적 공간을 탄생시킨다. 감시는 전통적으로 통제와 규제의 방법 하에서 강력한 엘리트 정치력으로 인해 용인된다. 여기에서 캐릭터의 자기-통제의 필요성이 대두된다. 영화 <아바타>에서는 인간의 효과적인 통제를 위해 푸코의 ‘생체권력’의 관점이 동원된다. 한편 관객은 이데올로기적 영화 제작자의 의도된 편집에 의해 그 의미의 강도가 조절된다. 영화 <아바타>의 주인공은 가상의 캐릭터가 먼저 설정된 이후에 필요에 따라 실제 인물을 캐스팅하여 인간은 차선책으로 설정될 수 있음을 알게 한다. 이때 편집의 선택은 매우 장애인 차별적 관점을 노출한다. 이러한 관점은 편집의 선택으로 인해 몸에 의해 작동되는 권력의 관점을 다양한 형태로 조망할 수 있게 한다. 영화 <아바타>는 바로 이러한 시선을 노골적으로 반영한다.
