The aim of this study is to analyze the contents and prospects of ecological education that is based upon ecology and includes the environmental views of ecology. We learn to get abilities to understand basic principles of ecology and live in harmony with ecosystem through ecological education. The goal of ecological education is to enhance ecological literacy, understanding ecological basic principles and living together with surrounding things. Ecological literacy includes understandings about how humans, society and ecosystem are related and how humans and society live sustainably. The elements of ecological literacy are composed of ecological knowledge, attitude toward ecology and ecological sensitivity. As a result of this study, ecological knowledge is classified according to basic ecological conceps and ecological principles and law, considering commons and diferrences. Finally, ecological education is based on ecological principles inherently and is pursuit of life changes. The studies of teaching, curriculum and evaluation methods in ecological education are urgently needed. The principle of holistic education goes well with ecological education and ecological education is one of fields to make realize holistic education.

현재 생태계의 위기를 극복하기 위하여 생태주의 환경관이 필요하다. 이 연구에서 생태주의 환경관을 포함하고, 생태학에 기반한 생태교육의 내용과 전망을 분석하였다. 우리는 생태교육을 통하여 생태학의 기본 원리를 이해하고 어떻게 조화를 이루어 사는 능력을 학습하여야 한다. 생태교육의 목표는 생태학의 기본 원리를 이해하고 함께 사는 것을 이해하는 능력인 생태소양을 증진시키는 것이다. 생태소양은 인간과 사회, 자연계가 서로 어떻게 관계하고 있고, 인간과 사회가 지속가능하게 관계하는 방법에 대한 이해를 포함한다. 생태소양의 요소로 생태적 지식, 생태중심 태도, 생태 감수성을 들 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 기초 생태학 개념과 생태학 원리 및 법칙에 입각한 생태적 지식의 종류를 분석하였다. 분석한 생태적 지식은 공통점과 유사점을 고려하여 7가지로 범주화하였다. 생태교육은 근본적으로 생태학의 원리에 기반한 교육이고 근본적인 삶의 변화를 목표로 한다. 생태교육의 교수 학습 방법, 생태교육 관련 교육과정과 생태교육의 평가 방법은 앞으로 생태교육에서 연구되어야 하는 분야이다. 홀리스틱 교육 비전의 원칙은 생태교육과 일치하며 홀리스틱 교육은 실현하는 분야가 될 것이다.
