The purpose of this study is to observe the character trends, to identify the effectiveness of the character education program, and to provide useful information to develop effective character education programs for college students. Students attending the same university where the character education is mandatory for three years participated in this study from 2012 to 2014. The results revealed that the average character scores in all sub-areas of ‘Knowing’, ‘Feeling’, and ‘Behaving’ increased as students moved to the higher grade. Also, the results of the item analysis showed that most item difficulties decreased by the time students reached the third year of college. However, students showed a difficulty in particular areas as well. Specifically, students had a difficult time to understand the necessity of “Honesty” and situations when “Honesty” is needed in the society as they moved to the higher grades. In addition, students are less likely to get involved or interested in global issues in the third year of college than volunteer work, self understanding, and empathic communication skills. The findings suggest that it is necessary to understand students' character levels by integrating ‘Knowing’, ‘Feeling’, and ‘Behaving’ of character rather than focusing on one aspect. Second, the scores in the specific character areas such as honesty, emphatic communication, self-understanding, etc as well as the mean score of each area should be understood. Finally, future research studies examining the relationship between the character scores and their experiences in volunteer work and extra curriculum will provide meaningful information on understanding students’ character levels.

본 연구는 대학생의 인성수준의 변화를 관찰하기 위해 3년 동안 동일한 학생들을 추적하여 그 들의 인성수준의 변화를 장기적 관점에서 파악하고 대학생에게 적합한 인성교육프로그램을 개발하 는데 유용한 정보를 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 연구를 위해 인성교육프로그램이 3년 동안 의무적으로 진행되고 있는 대학의 2012년 신입생들 중 교양 필수과목인 인성교육 수업을 수강하는 학생들에게 수업 전 검사를 실시하였고 이들을 추 적하여 2013년, 2014년에도 동일한 검사를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 학생들의 인성수준은 학년이 올 라갈수록 인지영역, 정의영역, 행동영역에서 통계적으로 의미 있는 성장을 보였다. 인성단계변화 역시 학생들이 학년이 올라갈수록 더 높은 단계로 이동하고 있음을 확인하였다. 인성수준의 변화 와 함께 조사한 문항난이도 비교에서는 인지영역에서는 학생들이 정직에 대한 필요성과 상황에 대 한 이해에 어려움을 겪고 있는 것으로 나타났고 정의영역에서는 세계문제에 대한 관심이 학년이 올라가면서 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 행동영역은 학년이 올라갈수록 실천력이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 본 연구에서는 첫째, 대학생 대상 인성교육에 있어 인지, 정의, 행동 영역에 대한 이해가 필요하며, 둘째, 인성을 이해할 때 대상 및 구체적 상황에 대한 이해가 필요함 을 제시하였다. 또한 인성수준은 전체를 이해하는 것도 프로그램의 효과성 검증에 도움이 되지만 인성의 특성상 개인이 가진 다양한 성향이나 특질과의 연관성을 고려하여 인성수준변화를 이해해 야 함을 제시하였다.
