This study aims at interpreting Ksitigarbha’s vows of religion and mercy ideas of Universal Compassion from the counseling perspective and looking into what could be their applications. (This study/Some people) intends to get help in resolving one and others’ internal pain in the world of mercy by building happiness through mercy execution and sacrificing oneself for the peace and prosperity of all existences with the spirit of Bodhisattva. In addition, this study intends to analyze what meaning of Ksitigarbha’s mercy realization is given to the modern people living in a complicated modern society; what influence Ksitigarbha’s mercy realization will have on a counselor and a client in a counseling situation, and how Ksitigarbha’s mercy realization could be applied. These analysis results of Ksitigarbha’s religion (mercy thought) show that it is not merely a means of getting people to notice the problems of pain experienced in life, but it wishes a counselor and client eternal peace and happiness when both come to mutual consciousness beyond the boundary between subjectivism and objectivism in the long run while going forward towards a lot higher level of consciousness connected with intuition and internal peace. In addition, Ksitigarbha’s religion wishes for establishment of one’s identity through its mercy, forgiveness, penitence. Thus, this study puts emphasis on Ksitigarbha’s religion as it has a powerful function and effect of counseling in that Ksitigarbha’s religion makes it possible for people (clients) to cope with hardships through self-introspection of one’s inner side problems, and to reconstitute individuals’ lives by coming up to their daily routines.

본고는 지장보살의 서원과 同體大悲의 자비사상을 상담학적 시각에서 해석 하고, 그 활용 방안이 있다면 어떠한 것이 있을 수 있는가에 대해 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 그리고 현대사회를 살아가는 복잡한 현대인에게 지장보살의 자비구현이 어 떤 의미가 있으며, 상담 장면에서 상담자와 내담자에게 어떤 영향을 줄 수 있 는지, 어떻게 활용 할 수 있는지 분석해보고자 한다. 단순히 삶에서 경험하는 고통의 문제만을 알아차리게 하는 수단이 아니라, 직관 및 내면의 평화와 연관 되어 있는 의식의 더 높은 차원으로 나아가며, 궁극에는 주관과 객관의 구분을 넘어선 의식의 합일에 이르러 상담자나 내담자가 항상 평온하고 행복하기를 바 라는 것이다. 지장신앙의 자비와 용서, 참회를 통하여 자신의 정체성을 확립하 기 바란다. 자기 내면의 문제점을 스스로 통찰해서 어려움을 해결한다는 점과 일상적인 삶의 요구에 부응하여 각자의 삶을 재구성할 수 있다는 점 등에서 강 력한 상담의 기능과 효과를 지니고 있다고 지장신앙을 강조하는 것이다.
