This study is to explore the meaning of amateurism and professionalism inherent in golf and to clearly identify its concept. First of all, the access to athleticism was preceded in the process of searching for the meaning of amateurism and professionalism. Athleticism, a kind of penchant for exercise appearing in the British public schools in the late 19th century, was the ideology of elite education at that time. Such athleticism included the elements of the code of a gentleman, sturdy Christian and imperial loyalty. Among them, the code of a gentleman connoting a moral sense is directly connected to amateurism. Such amateurism may be the mental attitude of elites derived from athleticism in the long run. The elites of those days considered sports as a means to cultivate athleticism including the cultivation of the code of gentleman, not as the end itself. On the contrary, professionalism was used as a mean to create the job and profit, the two concepts had something in common with regard to activity as a means, not as the end itself. In the modern era, these characteristics has been made clearly distinguished but they are mixed up in the golf. Therefore, this study is to identify those elements and to clearly lay the corner stone of the characteristics of golf.

이 연구는 골프에 내재된 아마추어리즘과 프로페셔널리즘의 의미를 탐색하고, 개념을 명확히 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 먼저 아마추어리즘과 프로페셔널리즘의 의미를 탐색하는 과정에서 애슬레티시즘에 대한 접근을 선행하였다. 19세기 후반 영국 퍼블릭 스쿨에서 나타난 운동애호주의인 애슬레티시즘은 당시 엘리트 교육의 이데올로기라 할 수 있다. 이러한 애슬레티시즘에는 신사도, 강건한 기독교도, 제국주의적 충성심의 요소가 포함된다. 그중에서 도 덕적 의미가 내포된 신사도가 아마추어리즘과 직결되는 것인데, 이러한 아마추어리즘은 결국 애슬레티시즘에서 파생된 엘리트의 정신자세라 할 수 있다. 당시의 엘리트 계층은 스포츠 자체를 목적으로 하지 않고 신사도의 배 양을 포함한 애슬레티시즘의 함양을 목적으로 하고 있었다. 반대로 프로페셔널리즘이라는 것은 스포츠를 직업 또 는 수익의 창출을 위한 수단으로 활용하는 것인데, 두 개념 모두 스포츠 자체에 목적이 있다기보다 수단으로서의 활동이라는 공통점을 보유하고 있다. 현대에 이르러 일반 스포츠에서는 이러한 특성이 명확히 구분되어 이루어지 고 있지만, 골프에서는 두 가지 요소가 혼재된 양상을 찾아볼 수 있다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 그러한 요소를 규 명하여 골프라는 종목의 특성을 명확히 정초하였다.
