“A Crowd of People Plowing It” is Aoki Hiroshi’s first and only full-length novel; it was published in 1941 by “Daiich-Syobou,” a Japanese publishing company. This work received favorable responses from Japanese critics, because of its in-depth exploration of life in a traditional farming village in Korea. However, the art of the novel and ability for Japanese was unpolished. A deeper inspection of the novel reveals that it describes the events on a farm in a Korean village that was preparing for winter. The novel describes the customs of a typical, traditional Korean farming village; some examples are the family’s awareness that the traditional big family system of the farming village should be continued; the “benefit clud” which is trade meeting in those day; a whole day of the farmers who gather in the Hwang-ju market; the people who meet while Mother was peddling; “Kimjang” which involves performing with neighbors; and the so-called Korea traditional wedding ceremony. This study aims to clarify traditional Korean thought – as expressed through the novel - such as the traditional wedding ceremony and the family's awareness of their social standing.

1941년 일본 대표출판사 제일서방(第一書房)에서 간행된 아오키 히로시(靑木洪)의 장편소설 󰡔경작하는 사람들(耕す人々の群)󰡕(일본어)는 그의 처음이자 마지막 장편소설이다. 이 작품에는 당시 조선농촌의 풍경이 상세히 묘사되어 있어, 그 서툰 소설적기법이나 일본어 실력에 비해 일본인 평론가로부터 크게 호평을 받았다. 그 내용을 상세히 살펴보면 추수가 끝나고 월동을 준비하는 시기에 농촌마을에서 일어나는 일들, 예를 든다면 전통적인 가문의식을 짙게 드러내는 농촌의 대가족들의 일상생활, 경제적인 모임인 계조직의 활약, 황주시장에 모이는 농민들의 하루, 어머니가 장사 다니면서 만나는 사람들, 가족 이웃들이 모여 담그는 김장, 그리고 이른바 한국 전통혼례식, 이외에도 땅다지는 소리나 상여꾼소리 같은 민요, 이러한 일상적인 풍속을 잘 그리고 있다. 또한 등장인물들도 전형화되어 있지 않고 개성을 가진 인물들으로 묘사되어 있다. 이 소고에서는 이 소설에 나타나는 가문의식이나 전통혼례식, 효사상이 어디에 근거를 두고 있는지 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다.
