Chinese traditional festivals are notable in forming and maintaining communities rather than as an escape from everyday life. This multicultural space serves not only religious and amusement purposes but also network marketing role. The following thesis is based on ‘Beijing’ a multicultural space, illustrating the tradition from traditional to modern. ‘Beijing’ is a city of politics, ancient temples, and festivals, the latter being especially remarkable or trading goods in the modern era. As the concepts and complex functions of the traditional festival “Myohoe” is understood, the thesis focuses on the alternat characters and features of “Myosi”, in which a noticeable transition to the modern era exists. The aim is to understand the festival’s main purpose : to discover its origins and the basic concept of how it expanded and formed into a community. In addition, also to find out how the traditional festival is used and practical ideas for reviving it in present times are explored.

중국의 전통축제는 일상의 일탈 기능보다 공동체 형성과 유지의 기능이 두드러졌다. 이는 종교적 공간이자 오락적 공간이며 시장 네트워크의 역할을 수행하는 복합문화 공간이었다. 이 논문에서는 전통에서 현대로의 변곡점이 되는 근대 전환기의 ‘북경(北京)’이라는 문화공간을 범주로 중국 전통축제를 연구하였다. 북경은 정치의 도시이자, 사묘(寺廟)의 도시였고, 축제의 도시였다. 특히 근대 전환기에는 물품을 교역하는 시장으로의 기능이 더욱 두드러졌다. 따라서 우선 중국의 전통축제인 ‘묘회(廟會)’의 개념과 복합적 기능을 파악한 뒤, 근대 전환기 북경 묘회의 두드러진 특징인 묘시(廟市)로의 성격 변화에 관해 고찰하였다. 축제의 핵심인 공동체로의 특성이 어디서 어떻게 발현되고 확장되는지 그 기본 기제를 이해함으로써, 전통 문화를 오늘날 어떻게 활용하고 재현할 것인지에 대한 실천적 방안을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
