Emile Gall, leader of Ecole de Nancy, is the artist who, with his works characteristic of naturalism, contributed to the richness and diversity in the movement of Art Nouveau in France. We can find his own esthetics and personality not only in his glass works but his furnitures well organized with forms and patterns. His furniture patterns, artistic presentation of inlaid works with a precise, elaborate craft skills of highest order, show well his taste for the decorative, his world vision, his view of nature and his strong inclination for literature. His favorites motifs are intensively concentrated on natural motifs, such as the rural landscapes of Nancy, animals and plants, the insect species etc., it may fairly said that the selections of motifs and the forms of expression in his furniture art are the fruits, complex of his attachment for Nancy, his nature worship, his way of thinking as a pantheist, the influence of Japonisme, his enthusiasm for the literature of symbolism. Our paper aims at studying the formation stuffs and the process of the furniture works of Emile Galle : enrichment and increment of decorative by receiving and unifying those various elements, intensifying the motifs and extending the meanings of the furniture patterns. For that purpose, we tried, In chapter II, to study the environment by which his furniture art has been shaped : cultural tradition of his native city Nancy, doctrines of Ecole de Nancy and especially the vision of furniture of Emile Galle. The chapter III is entirely dedicated to the elucidation of the characteristics of pattern art of his furnitures : we attempted to elucidate the meanings of the remarkable phenomenon that his furniture patterns are strongly concentrated on naturalistic motifs, and to make a deep analysis in his peculiar styles and some important original images.

에밀 갈레(Emile Galle, 1846～1904)는 낭시파(Ecole de Nancy)의 리더로서 파리의 예술가들과는 매우 다른 자연주의적 조형성을 추구함으로써 프랑스 아르누보(Art Nouveau) 운동에 다양성을 부여해준 인물이다. 지금까지 갈레 작품에 대한 관심과 연구는 유리공예분야에 치중되어 왔으나, 그의 독특한 미학과 개성은 형태와 문양이 유기적으로 구성된 가구들에도 잘 발휘되어 있다. 치밀하고 세련된 상감기법으로 표현된 그의 가구문양들에는, 장식성에 대한 그의 취미와 더불어 그의 가치관, 자연관, 문학적 성향 등이 잘 반영되어 있다. 그가 즐겨 다룬 문양의 소재와 주제들은 낭시의 전원 풍경과 동식물, 곤충과 같은 자연 모티브에 특히 집중되어 있는데, 그 주제선택과 표현방식에는 갈레의 낭시에 대한 사랑, 자연에 대한 숭배와 범신론적 사유, 일본미술의 영향, 상징주의 문학의 감수성 등이 복합적으로 작용하고 있다고 할 수 있다.이 논문의 목표는 갈레가 이러한 복합적 요소들을 어떠한 방식으로 수용하면서 가구 문양의 주제와 의미의 심화를 통해 문양의 장식성을 확장해나가는지를 고찰하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 제2장에서 갈레 공예예술의 배경이 되는 낭시의 문화적 전통과 낭시학파의 이념, 갈레의 가구관(觀)을 고찰한 다음, 제3장에서 갈레의 문양장식이 자연 모티브에 집중되어 있는 현상의 의미를 밝히고, 그의 가구들에 나타난 문양표현의 양식적 특징과 주요 이미지들을 분석, 해명해내려 하였다.
