This study summarized how the Korean old vernacular letters are introduced and studied, examine the characteristics of Korean old vernacular letters and their values and limits as the Korean language history data, and take a look at the modern use of Korean old vernacular letters. Currently, there are 2,940 Korean old vernacular letters from the Joseon Dynasty that can be used for research, and the basis for the systematic study of Korean old vernacular letters is prepared through the publication of the Books in Translation and Annotation and the source book on decipher. The Korean old vernacular letters have been fully studied as the primary source for Korean language studies, however, not in depth in literary aspect. The letters have also been studied in the aspect of life history and calligraphy. For they show relatively many spoken languages used at the time they were written compared with the printed books, they become great data for studying honorific titles, vocabularies, and dialects, and they also carry values for they move up the period for grammatical changes that had been studied through the grammatical phenomena appearing in them. They also have limits for it is difficult to generalize the notation and phonological phenomena and precisely determine local dialects. In summary, Korean old vernacular letters can have various applications such as the compilation of dictionary, educational material for Korean language in life history, development of cultural contents using the contents of the letters, development of font, and calligraphy and art industry.

본고는 언간 자료의 소개 현황과 연구 현황을 정리하고, 언간의 특징, 국어사 자료로서의 가치와 한계를 짚어 보고 언간의 현대적 활용에 대해서 살핀 연구이다. 현재 연구 자료로 활용될 수 있는 조선시대 언간은 2,940여 건이며, 역주집과 판독 자료집의 출간 등으로 언간의 체계적인 연구를 위한 토대가 마련되었다. 언간은 국어학 연구의 1차 자료로서 활발히 연구가 이루어지고 있으며, 문학적 측면에서는 심도 있는 연구가 이루어지지 않은 상태이다. 또한 생활사적 측면이나 서예적 측면에서도 연구되고 있다. 언간은 간본 자료에 비해 필사 당시의 구어를 상대적으로 많이 반영하고 있어, 경어법, 어휘, 방언 연구의 좋은 자료가 되며, 언간에 나타나는 문법 현상을 통하여 그간 연구되었던 문법 변화의 시기를 앞당기기도 한다는 점에서 가치가 있다. 표기법, 음운 현상의 일반화하기 어렵고, 지역 방언을 정확히 파악하기 어렵다는 점에서 한계를 가지기도 한다. 언간은 사전 편찬, 국어 생활사 교육 자료, 언간의 내용을 활용한 문화 콘텐츠 개발, 폰트 개발, 서예와 예술 산업 등 다양하게 활용될 수 있다.
