The purpose of this paper is to examine the academic application of royal hangeul manuscripts (manuscripts of the royal family of Joseon dynasty written in the Korean alphabet) by means of illuminating the current status of their philological characteristics and transmission. In this study, the definition and scope of royal hangeul manuscripts, are limited to hand-written documents written or read by, or related to, the king or his family members, but inclusive of documents of all forms from a piece of paper to a book. During the Japanese colonial period, Joseon's royal documents were managed by the Office of the Royal Yi Family and the Government-General of Joseon, but they have been since divided and transferred to the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University, Jangseogak Archives at the Academy of Koran Studies, National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, and National Palace Museum of Korea. After comprehending the current state of transmission of royal hangeul manuscripts by examining and organizing hangeul manuscripts among the numerous royal documents stored at various institutions, this article presents a method for analyzing the characteristics and production background of royal hangeul manuscripts through thematic categorization.

본고는 조선시대 왕실 한글 필사본의 전승 현황과 그 문헌학적 특성을 밝힘으로써 학술적 연구 가치를 검토하 는 데에 목적이 있다. 왕실 한글 필사본에 대한 학문적 관심을 환기시키고 활발한 연구를 유도하는 데에 밑거 름이 될 수 있기를 바란다. 왕실 한글 필사본의 개념과 범위는 국왕과 그 가족이 직접 작성 혹은 사용하였거나 그들을 대상으로 한 한글 필사본으로 국한하되 낱장부터 책자까지 모든 형태의 자료를 대상으로 삼았다. 그리고 일제 강점기 하에서 분 산 이관된 왕실 자료가 이왕직과 조선총독부를 거쳐 현재 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원, 한국학중앙연구원 장서각, 국립문화재연구소, 국립고궁박물관에 전승되기까지의 배경을 살펴보고, 한글 필사본의 전승 현황을 조사하였다. 이를 바탕으로 왕실 한글 필사본을 유형별․주제별로 범주화하여 분석함으로써 문헌학적 특성을 검토하였고, 무엇보다도 한문본이나 인쇄본과의 관계와 차별성에 주목하였다. 더불어 왕실 한글 필사본의 연 구 가치와 방향을 고민해 보았다.
