The purpose of the correctional education is to live a renewal life after release for prisoners. However, the existing correctional education was mainly focused to get a degree or a certifications. So it was limited to reflect opportunities to the prisoners. Emotional education is also limited to form a civil identity because it is not qualified as the quality and effectiveness. But it is important to educate the prisoners that they could establish the autonomy and civic identity. Therefore the liberal education could help establish the autonomy and civic identity for the prisoners. The liberal education is important to change the prisoners and to give a social security. Despite the liberal education is critical to have the will to regain self-esteem and the renewal life for the prisoners, that have not yet been settled to Korea. Therefore, this paper introduces and analyze the current situation of the liberal education for the prisoners in Korea. The current situations of the liberal education for the prisoners is conducted in conjunction with universities or institutions during long-term. Also it is conducted by inviting external lecturers like special lecture. However, it is not existed a unified curriculum to change the prisoners, and the financial situation is also poor. Therefore this paper suggests some alternatives for the liberal education for the prisoners. First, it is necessary to develop a unified curriculum of the liberal education for the prisoners. Second, it is necessary to raise a professional staff dedicated to the liberal education for the prisoners. Third, it should be expanded material foundation of the liberal education for the prisoners. Forth, it needs the attention of the individuals and various institutions.

교정교육은 수용자들을 변화시켜 출소 후에 새로운 삶을 살아갈 수 있도록 하는데 목적이 있다. 그러나 전통적인 교정교육은 주로 학과교육과 자격증 취득 등에 치중하여 수용자 스스로에 대한 반성의 기회를 제한하였으며, 이 를 보완하기 위해 실시하는 정서교육도 질과 효과성이 검증되지 못하여 시민의식을 형성하기에는 한계가 있었다 . 수용자들의 자율성과 시민으로서의 정체성을 확립시키기 위해서는 수용자들 내면을 자극하고 스스로 삶에 희 망을 갖도록 하는 것이 중요하며 이는 곧 인문교육을 통해서 가능하다. 인문교육은 수용자들의 자아존중감 회복과 더불어 새로운 삶에 대한 의지를 갖게 한다. 즉 인문교육은 수용자들 을 변화시켜 출소 후 사회에 잘 적응할 수 있도록 하게 하고 재범율을 낮추어 건강하고 안정된 사회를 만드는데 기여한다. 수용자들에 대한 인문교육의 중요성과 필요성에도 불구하고 그동안 우리나라에서는 활성화되지 못하 고 있다. 이에 본 고에서는 우리나라 교정시설에서 이루어지고 있는 인문교육의 현황을 살펴보고 이를 토대로 수 용자를 대상으로 한 인문교육을 활성화하기 위한 다음의 방안들을 제시하였다. 첫째, 수용자들의 인문교육을 위한 통일된 교육과정이 개발될 필요가 있다. 둘째, 수용자들의 인문교육을 전담하는 전문 직원을 육성할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 수용자들의 인문교육 확대를 위하여 물적 기반이 조성되어야 한다. 넷째, 개인과 각종 단체의 관심이 필요하다.
