Coordination between the interactants of communication enables each other to build an intimate relationship and help deliver accurate and persuasive messages. Accordingly, a person who coordinates well with others can interact in a both intimate and efficient manner, performing a high level of communicative competence. This phenomenon where interpersonal coordination is naturally activated is termed interaction synchrony. It refers to the coordination of verbal and nonverbal cues during interpersonal communication. Most studies on interaction synchrony, however, concentrated on intimacy through visual cues, while paying relative inattention to vocal cues. This study investigates what effects interaction synchrony of vocal and visual cues have on the perception of both intimacy and communication efficiency. Results showed that, in general, visual cues had stronger influence than vocal cues, and this was especially evident in the perception of intimacy. Both vocal and visual cues affect communication efficiency, but visual cues have greater influence on intimacy. On the contrary, communication efficiency scored high only when eye contact and speech rate converged, suggesting that interaction synchrony had stronger influence on the perception of communication efficiency rather than intimacy. Results of study showed that interaction synchrony has equal effect on the perception of both intimacy and communication efficiency. This contrasts with existing studies, which focused solely on intimacy.

대인커뮤니케이션에서 상대방과의 조화는 정확하고 설득력있게 자신의 의사를 전달하면 서 원만한 인간관계를 맺게 한다. 상호동기화는 행위자들 사이에 음성 언어와 몸짓 언어가 일 치하는 현상으로서 언어적, 비언어적 스타일의 유사성을 통하여 이루어진다. 그러나 대부분 의 상호동기화 연구는 몸짓 언어에만 치중함으로써 음성 언어를 함께 고려하지 못했고 또한 관계의 친밀도에 미치는 영향을 강조한 나머지 커뮤니케이션 효율성에 미치는 영향을 간과한 경향이 있었다. 그런 맥락에서 본 연구는 음성 언어(말 속도)와 몸짓 언어(눈 맞춤)를 통해 이 루어지는 상호동기화가 관계의 친밀도와 커뮤니케이션 효율성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알 아보고자 한다. 연구 결과, 전체적으로 몸짓 언어가 음성 언어보다 커뮤니케이션 효과에 미치는 영향이 더 큰 것으로 나타났고 이와 같은 결과는 커뮤니케이션 효율성보다는 적절성, 즉 관계의 친밀도 에 대한 평가에서 더욱 두드러졌다. 커뮤니케이션 효율성에 대한 평가에는 몸짓 언어와 음성 언어가 모두 영향을 미쳤지만 관계의 친밀도 평가에서는 몸짓 언어의 영향이 훨씬 컸다는 것 이다. 또한 관계의 친밀도에 대한 평가와는 달리 커뮤니케이션 효율성 평가는 음성 언어와 몸 짓 언어가 모두 일치하는 상황에서 높게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 행위자들 사이의 음성 언어 및 몸짓 언어 일치 여부는 관계의 친밀도 평가보다는 커뮤니케이션 효율성 평가에 더 큰 영향 을 미치는 것을 말해 준다.
