This study is to illuminate the role and limitations of social studies in multicultural education. To do this, first, we trace present and controversial multicultural issues which prevent the korean society from developing multicultural citizenship. Second, to define the role of social studies in multicultural education, we examine the nature and definition which state the purposes of social studies and the topics covered in that integrated studies. Third, we analyze the curriculum dilemmas that social studies should deal with to face actual issues and future challenges in multicultural education. To fulfill their role and responsibilities in multicultural education, social studies provide a framework for selecting and organizing multicultural education contents. An important first step in this work is to recognize the nature and goals of social studies as an inclusive discipline, and to fix the epistemological errors that can mislead multicultural education work.

이 연구는 ‘사회인식을 통한 시민적 자질을 육성하는 교과’인 사회과가 우리나라 다문화교육에서 수행해야 할 역할과 한계를 조명하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 첫째, 다문화 시민성의 발전을 저해하는 다 문화 의식의 서로 다른 모습을 추적하였고, 둘째, 다문화교육에서 사회과교육의 역할을 설정하기 위해 사 회과의 성격과 목표에 내포된 다문화교육 정체성을 확인하였으며, 셋째, 사회과교육이 다문화교육을 수 행하는 과정에서 해결해야 하는 내적 딜레마를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 사회과교육은 우리나라 다문화교육 의 방향설정과 교육내용 제시에서 중심교과로서의 역할을 다해야 하며, 이를 위해서는 사회과교육의 개념 과 목표에 대한 근본적인 성찰을 통해 다문화교육에서 인식론적 혼란을 야기할 수 있는 오류에 대한 교정 작업이 선행되어야 한다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.
