Through 42 in-depth interviews, this exploratory study sought to understand how members of the Korean diaspora in the Washington, DC,area make meaning of their ethnic enclave and ways in which social capital influence the meaning making process and make up of their cultural identity. The findings revealed that Koreans create opportunities for social capital through church network; within the church community, their Christian faith, and small tight-knit personal networks were used to expand and extend social capital. The older generations were found to be in the center of building and using social capital; and the younger generations were found to have limited access to church capital due to their weak sense of belonging in the Korean community. Findings also suggest weak social capital at the community level as social capital in the Korean community tends to be accumulated and exhausted at church level andsmall-group level because of the ways in which Koreans network. Factorsthat contributed to weak community capital, ways in which community capital could be accumulated, and suggestions for future studies are provided.

본 연구는 워싱턴 DC에 거주하고 있는 재미 한인들이 한인 거주지역에 대하여 어떠한 생각을 가지고 있으며 한인사회의 사회적 자본과 그들의 정체성이 이러한 의미 부여 과정에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 살펴보았다. 42명과의 심층인터뷰를 통해 아래와 같은 결과를 도출해 내었다. 워싱턴 DC 에 거주하고 있는 재미 한인들은 한인 교회 네트워크를 통해 사회적 자본을 구축, 사용하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며 개인 네트워크 및 세대에 따라 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 교회에 사회적 자본이 구축이 되는 이유는 교회의 크기, 위치 및 교회 인원 보다는 기독교 신앙이 영향을 끼치는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 2세들보다 한인사회에 소속감이 강하고 한인사회 이외 네트워크와의 연결고리가 약한 1세대들이 한인사회의 사회적 자본을 더 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 한인들의네트워크가 교회 혹은 소규모 개인 네트워크 위주로 형성 및 사용이 되는 이유로 한인사회의 사회적 자본이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 워싱턴 DC 의사회적 자본이 적은 이유를 설명하며 한인사회 차원의 (community level) 사회적 자본을 축척하기 위한 방안을 제안한다.
