Augustine’s thought of the goodness of marriage came out of his historical context, and developed his idea of sexuality and marriage in the perspective of moderate asceticism against strict asceticism appeared as religio-cultural phenomena in his Roman society. His expression of sexuality and marriage warned that strict asceticism as a superior religious behavior might reveal pride and its sin, holding moderate asceticism. His idea of moderate asceticism and the religio-cultual context in North Africa led Augustine to differentiate not only from Jovinianus’ idea of marriage but also from Manicheans and Jerome’s interpretation of sexuality and marriage based on strict asceticism. As a result, in the end of 4th century and the early 5th century, Augustine needed to explain the positive functions of sex and marriage in human society, and through that explanation he could emphasize the bond of marriage and its social function.

아우구스티누스의 성과 결혼의 유익에 대한 사상은 역사적 공백상태에서 출현한 것이 아니라, 당시 로마사회에 종교문화적인 현상으로 출현했던, 특히, 기독교 내외에 만연했던 엄격한 금욕주의에 반하여 온건한 금욕주의의 입장에서 발전했다. 아우구스티누스의 성과 결혼의 유익과 순결에 대한 그의 설명은 엄격한 금욕주의에서 보일 수 있는 교만과 그로 인한 죄에 대한 경계를 나타내며 온건한 금욕주의의 관점에서 이루어졌다. 이러한 그의 온건한 금욕주의적 관점과 북아프리카의 종교문화적인 상황은 동시대의 조비니아누스에 대한 논박으로 이끌었을 뿐만 아니라, 마니교주의자들이나 히에로니무스가 엄격하게 금욕적으로 성과 결혼이해를 한 것과는 상당한 차이를 보이도록 아우구스티누스를 이끌었다. 결과적으로, 4세기 말과 5세기 초에 아우구스티누스는 북아프리카와 로마세계의 엄격한 금욕주의가 유행했던 정황에서 성, 결혼, 그리고 순결의 순기능을 교회 안과 밖을 위해 온건한 금욕주의적 입장에서 설명할 필요성이 있었고, 이런 설명을 통해 부부의 연합과 사회적 기능을 강조할 수 있었다.
