This dissertation aims at researching spatio-temporal expressions of light and developing a fashion design that grafts these characteristics. For the research, documentary research was conducted on books and precedent studies related to the concept and physical traits of light, space-time characteristics. Also, research was done for the cases of expression by conducting a documentary research on the field of art, and it was applied to the development of a spatio-temporal design. The space-time characteristics of light used in the field of art can be divided into the expression of “time” and “extension of space.” First, the expression of “time” by light appears as change influenced by the illumination, color, flickering, and movement and is expressed by the direct change of a light source and change of a luminous effect created by the environment surrounding the light source. Secondly, spatio-temporal “space extension” by light is expressed as the overlapping of space created by the transparency of light, the expansion of space created by the shadows of light, and as the virtual space created by light. The development of design using the space-time characteristics of light was created by using achromatic colors in order to maximize the effect of light, setting the headpiece as an item. “Time” created through the flickering of light was applied to design I and for design II, “space extension,” where space extension appears by using the shadow created by the external light source, was applied. For design III, both “time” and “space extension” were applied using the change in color and flickering effect of the light source and the virtual space created by light to develop a spatio-temporal design. Such a design development using the space-temporality of light has significance in that it diversified design materials by grafting the light on fashion items.

본 논문은 빛의 시공간적 표현을 연구하고 이를 접목한 패션디자인 개발에 그 목적이 있다. 연구 목적을 위하여 빛의 개념 및 물리적 특성, 시공간에 관련된 서적 및 선행 연구를 문헌 연구하였으며, 예술 분야의 문헌 연구를 통해 그 표현사례를 연구하고 이를 적용한 시공간적 디자인을 개발하였다. 예술 분야에 활용된 빛의 시공간성은 ‘시간 흐름’의 표현과 ‘공간 확장’으로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 첫째, 빛에 의한 ‘시간 흐름’의 표현은 빛의 조도ㆍ색상ㆍ점멸ㆍ움직임 등에 의한 변화로 나타나며, 광원의 직접변화와 광원을 둘러싼 환경에 의한 발광 효과의 변화에 의해 표현되고 있다. 둘째, 빛에 의한 시공간적 ‘공간 확장’은 빛의 투과로 인한 투명성에 의한 공간의 중첩, 빛의 그림자에 의한 공간의 연장, 빛의 광적에 의한 가상공간으로 표현된다. 빛의 시공간성을 활용한 디자인 개발은 헤드피스를 아이템으로 하여 빛의 효과를 최대한 살리기 위해 무채색을 사용하여 기획하였다. 디자인Ⅰ은 빛의 점멸을 통한 ‘시간 흐름’을 적용하였으며, 디자인 Ⅱ는 외부광원에 의한 그림자를 활용하여 공간의 연장이 나타나는 ‘공간 확장’을 적용하였다. 디자인 Ⅲ은 광원의 색상변화와 점멸 효과 및 빛에 의한 가상공간을 이용하여 ‘시간 흐름’과 ‘공간 확장’ 모두를 적용한 시공간적 디자인을 개발하였다. 이러한 빛의 시공간성을 활용한 디자인 개발은 빛을 패션 아이템에 접목하고 활용하여 디자인 소재의 폭을 넓혀 보았다는데 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.
