The female social class has been in decline ever since we began to live in a male-dominated society. Both China and Korea experienced a long period of feudalism, during which the idea that men are superior to women was impressed on all. Women were forbidden from taking part in any social practice of authority. They were cooped up in tiny rooms where they had only to help their husbands and teach children. However, women who suffered from sexual discrimination and pressure called not only for freedom and equality between men and women, but also for women to take part in social practices of authority. This desire was sublimated into literature and described through the activities of heroines in many literary narratives. Although these women live in a male-dominated society, they completely reveal the talents and abilities of women, telling us that women are also able to play leading roles. They even fight as men in battle and win their spurs. Both the Chinese heroine novel Women General of the Yang Family and the Korean heroine novel A Biography of Mrs Park satirize incompetent men and, in contrast, speak highly of women’s independent consciousness. Thanks to differences of culture and argument between China and Korea, dissimiliar narrative traits come into view. Heroine novels not only criticize incompetent men but also show fiction to be a catharsis for the world of women.

인류사회를 남성들이 독재하던 그때부터 여성들은 줄곧 남권문화의 무대 뒷면에 가려져 있었다. 기나긴 봉건사회를 경과하면서 중국과 한국의 여성들은 낮은 사회적 지위로 하여 각종 사회활동에 참여할 수 없었으므로 평생을 비좁은 규방과 가정의 울타리에 갇혀서 남편을 돕고 아이들을 교육하는 역할에만 충실해왔다. 하지만 사회의 성적차별과 압박은 부녀자들의 해방과 자유, 남녀평등과 사회생활참여를 요구하는 강한 욕망을 훼멸할 수는 없었다. 그녀들의 강렬한 꿈은 문학으로 승화되었고 실제로 수많은 문학에 여성영웅들의 활약상이 대량으로 반영되었다. 그녀들은 남성들이 주도하는 세계에 뛰어들어 자신의 총명한 기질과 재능을 아낌없이 보여주었으며 심지어는 남성들과 함께 전쟁터에 뛰어들어 용감히 싸우고 업적을 쌓기도 했다. 중국과 한국의 여성영웅소설의 대표작인 <양문여장>과 <박씨부인전>은 모두 무능한 남성들에 대한 신랄한 풍자와 함께 여성들의 자주의식을 보여주면서도 부동한 문화와 부동한 시대적 담론으로 말미암아 서로 다른 양상을 보이고 있다. 여성영웅소설은 무능한 남자들의 자화상인 동시에 허구적인 이야기를 통한 여성들의 카타르시스이기도 하다.
