This study examined the book rental shop operation status in Seoul. At present, a total of 261 book rental shops remain in 25 gus of Seoul. Total number was the result of literature review and field study, using business registration certificate, the telephone directory and internal portal site, and visiting the book rental shops in business including the book rental shops that would exist nearby under the help of users and operators of book rental shops. Most book rental shops in 25 gus of Seoul are located at the area with cheap rent. So that it is not easy to find it visually. All of them are located at the area where redevelopment is scheduled. Book store operators are expected to close once redevelopment project gets started. It is because the shop operators think that rent will rise and it must be more effective to close the business in the situation where there are no new lenders. Books of book rental shop closed this way are currently purchased by used bookstores. For example, if you visit secondhand bookstore at Bosu-dong, Busan, you can find diverse kinds of books borrowed at book rental shops throughout the country. While the closure of book rental shops is accelerated at present, new types of book rental shops like internet book rental shop appear. And internet bookstores like Interpark are prepared to actively participate at book rental business. New types of borrowing books through internet, rather than traditional bookstore operation type of the past, are newly attempted. And this study introduced this problem.

이 글은 서울의 도서대여점 운영 실태를 시론적(試論的)으로 다룬 것이다. 현 재 서울 25개구에 남아있는 도서대여점은 모두 261곳이다. 총량은 문헌연구와 현 장조사를 병행한 결과로, 사업자등록부, 전화번호부, 인터넷 포털싸이트 등을 활 용했으며, 도서대여점을 방문 조사하는 과정에서 도서대여점의 운영자와 이용자 들의 도움을 받아 쉽게 확인이 어려운 도서대여점도 포함시킨 것이다. 서울 25개구에 남아있는 도서대여점은 대부분 임대료가 저렴한 곳에 위치해 있 다. 이로 인하여 육안으로 영업장을 확인하기 어렵다. 이렇게나마 운영되고 있는 도서대여점은 조만간 없어질 예정이다. 그 이유는 모두 재개발 예정지에 존재하기 때문이다. 도서대여점의 운영자들은 재개발 사업이 시행되고 나면 임대료가 상승 할 것이고 신규 대여자도 거의 없기 때문에 폐업이 효율적이라고 생각하고 있다. 이렇게 폐업한 도서대여점의 책들은 현재 헌책방에서 속속 매입하고 있다. 부산 보수동의 헌책방에 가보면 골목마다 전국 각지의 도서대여점에서 대여해주었던 책들이 쌓여있다. 도서대여점은 급속히 없어지고 있지만 한편으로는 인터넷 도서대여점과 같은 새로운 방식의 도서대여점이 등장하고 있다. 옛날처럼 매장으로 직접 찾아가서 빌 려보는 방식이 아니라 인터넷을 통해서 필요한 책을 빌려보는 시대가 된 것이다. 서울을 포함하여 전국에 남아있는 도서대여점의 운영 실태 전반을 살펴보는 것 이 원래의 목표였지만 이 글에서는 우선 서울의 세 지역만을 한정시켜 살펴보았 다. 이 문제는 차후 보완하기로 한다.
