Introducing with Fred Fidler’s Contingency Theory in 1960s, Situational Leadership is one of today’s major leadership theories with the contributions of Hersey and Blanchard’s Readiness Theory, House’s Path-Goal Theory, Vroom and Yetton’s Discision Model. The main idea of Situational Leadership is that a leader’s leadership style is not fixed but changed by fitting in the various situations in which organizations get through. Situational leadership theory becomes a very useful tool for the churches both to understand today’s world and to apply easily and biblically to the ministry. The situational leadership could be applying into the pastoral ministry in the following areas: congregational sizes; congregational readiness, congregational life-cycle, and the local situations surrounding a church. Pastor’s leadership style should be changed with the situations in which his or her congregation gets for ministerial effectiveness. Renewing pastoral leadership is the best way to revitalize the Korean church. With the insights provided by situational leadership theories, minsters can impact on the Korean church to be renewed if they change their leadership style according to the variious church situations effectively.

상황적 리더십은 1960년대에 피들러의 상황적합이론으로 소개된 이후 허쉬와 블랜차드의 구성원 성숙도이론, 하우스의 경로-목표 이론, 그리고 브룸과 이튼의 ‘규범적 의사결정 이론’ 등을 거치면서 발전을 거듭하여 오늘날 주요 리더십 이론 중의 하나로 자리 잡고 있다. 이 이론의 핵심내용은 리더의 리더십 행태는 고착되어 있는 것이 아니라 효율성을 위해 조직의 여러 상황변화에 적합한 유형으로 나타나야 한다는 것이다. 상황적 리더십이론은 오늘날 교회에서 관심을 가지기에 시의적절할 뿐만 아니라 성서적으로 이해하기 쉬우며 적용하기 쉽다. 이러한 상황적 리더십이론을 목회현장에 적용하면 다음과 같다. 목회자의 리더십은 교회의 규모에 따라, 교인들의 성숙도로 표현되는 능력이나 자발성에 따라, 교회의 생애주기에 따라, 그리고 교회를 둘러싼 지역사회의 상황에 따라 적절하게 변화하여야 한다. 한국교회를 새롭게 하려는 다양한 시도가 있지만, 리더십의 새로운 변화만큼 중요한 시도는 없다. 상황적 리더십에서 강조하는 바대로 오늘날 목회자들이 교회의 상황에 따라 적절하게 자신의 리더십을 변화시켜나간다면 한국교회의 갱신에 또 하나의 선한 영향을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
