Recent depreciation of US dollar relative to the Won currency has drawn increasingly more interest to the foreign exchange risk insurance especially since many Korean exporting firms suffered the KIKO crisis in 2008. Under this circumstance, a good understanding of motivation for the foreign exchange risk insurance is necessary to yield a proper policy implication. This paper considers and compares two motivations for joining the foreign exchange risk insurance: foreign exchange gain and exchange risk management. By using the Markov switching model, we study how those two motivations affect the demand for the foreign exchange risk insurance. The Markov switching model allows for multiple regimes in relating the two motivations to the demand for the foreign exchange risk insurance. We also study how those two motivations depend on each other by estimating the Markov switching model. Our empirical findings show that exchange risk management is more persistent motivation for the foreign exchange risk insurance than foreign exchange gain. According to the evidences, exporting firms indeed seem to be aware that key role of foreign exchange risk insurance is to reduce exchange risk, not to make foreign exchange gains.

최근 환율의 하락세와 2008년 글로벌 금융위기 당시 발생한 키코(KIKO) 사태 등의 부작용에 따라 환변동보험에 대한 관심은 날로 높아지는 추세이다. 이러한 가운데 환변동보험 가입 목적에 대한 올바른 파악은 향후 환변동보험 수요 증가에 대한 정책적 대응을 위해 필요하다. 본 연구는 환변동보험 가입의 목적을 환차익 목적과 환리스크 관리 목적이라는 두 가지 유형의 목적으로 분류하고 이들 목적이 환변동보험 가입에 미치는 영향을 마코프 전환모형 추정을 통해 고찰한다. 독립변수와 종속변수 사이의 단일한 유형의 관계를 전제로 하는 일반적인 선형회귀모형과 달리 마코프 전환모형은 독립변수와 종속변수 사이에 다양한 유형의 관계가 성립할 가능성을 고려한다. 또한 마코프 전환모형을 추정함으로써 과거 시점의 관계와 현재 시점의 관계 사이의 연관성을 살펴볼 수 있다. 이러한 마코프 전환모형을 이용한 본 연구의 실증결과는 환차익 목적에 따른 환변 동보험 가입은 지속적이지 않은 반면 환리스크 관리 목적의 환변동보험 가입은 지속적임을 제시한 다. 이러한 실증분석 결과는 환리스크 축소라는 환헤지 본연의 취지에 대한 수출기업들의 인식이 높아지고 있음을 암시하며, 향후 환변동보험과 같은 공적보험 형태에 대한 수요는 더욱 확대될 것으로 전망된다.
