Today, various discussions are actively in progress in History Academia and among Buddhists regarding when the modernization of Korean Buddhism began and what the indicators of the modernization of Buddhism was. This study focused on ‘the marriage of monks’ among various indicators of the modernization of Korean Buddhism and attempted to look into its trend among Japanese Buddhists in Japan the process of accepting the marriage of monks and in Joseon during the Japanese colonial period. For this purpose, it considered the background of the start of the marriage of monks in Japanese Buddhism based on the existing studies and the journey in which it came to and was exposed to the colonial Joseon, centering around the comments of Baek Yong-seong and Han Yong-un. What this study considered was that Baek Yong-seong and Han Yong-un presumed each different look of the marriage of monks. Han Yong-un modelled the marriage of monks in Japan and dreamed the resurrection of Joseon Buddhism while Baek Yong-seong longed for expelling it, regarding it as an image of apostasy, which is an ‘evil’ that must not be mixed in Joseon Buddhism. Han Yong-un who experienced modern aspects of Japanese Buddhism attempted to suggest the marriage of monks as a direction in which Korean Buddhism should proceed. Like this, regarding the issue of the marriage of monks in Korean Buddhism, the image of the marriage of monks in South Korea as well as the image of the marriage of monks in Korean Buddhism would possibly be considered more specifically when a perspective that could look at an external space (Japan) simultaneously instead of the understanding in us (Joseon) is provided.

한국불교의 근대화는 언제부터이고 한국불교 근대화의 지표는 무엇으로 삼을 것인가? 오늘날 이에 대한 다양한 논의가 역사학계 및 불교계에서 활 발히 진행되고 있다. 이 글에서는 한국불교의 다양한 근대화 지표 중 ‘대처 (帶妻)’에 초점을 맞추고, 이를 둘러싼 일본에서의 일본불교계의 동향과 함께 식민지기 조선에서의 대처승 수용과정을 검토하고자 했다. 이를 위해 기존 선행연구를 바탕으로 일본 불교의 대처 시작의 배경과, 그것이 식민지 조선 에 건너와 노출되어가는 노정을 백용성과 한용운의 언설을 중심으로 고찰했 다. 이 글에서 고찰한 바는, 대처승을 둘러싸고 백용성과 한용운은 서로 다 른 대처의 모습을 상정하고 있었다. 한용운은 일본의 대처를 모델로 하여 조 선불교 부활을 꿈꾸었고, 백용성은 대처 자체를 파계의 이미지로 조선 불교 에 혼재되어서는 안 되는 ‘악(惡)’으로 보고 쫓아내기를 갈망했다. 일본불교 의 근대적 측면을 경험한 한용운은 대처를 오히려 한국불교의 나아갈 방향 으로 제시하고자 했던 것이다. 이처럼 한국 불교의 대처승 문제는 우리(조선) 안에서의 이해가 아닌 외부(일본)를 동시에 살펴볼 수 있는 시각이 제공되었 을 때, 오늘날 한국불교의 대처상(像)은 물론, 한국 내의 대처상(像)을 보다 구체적으로 고찰할 수 있을 것이다.
