This dissertation is for the consideration of Baek, Yongseong’s tactics having an intend to expand his method. So far, the study on Yongseong’s thought, his teaching tactics and succession etc has still stayed on the basic level. On such a background, I implemented the basic study for Seon Master, Donggwang who received a teaching tactics from Yongseong. But Donggwang was not perceived as a discipline of Yongseong, even though he received Jeonbeopge from his teacher, Yongseong. There hardly can find his dharma name on the epitaph of Seon Master, Yongseong at Haein temple, which Han Yongun wrote in 1941, and also on the epitaph of Great Master, Yongseong at Haein Temple, which was established in 1994. Donggwang was a main figure of 3.1 independent movement at Beomeo Temple, Seon Sunim in the 1920’s, studying at Jungang Dharma College, and left his whereabouts of propagation activities in the regions of Beomeo Temple and Gyeongnam. And there come a lot from many logs on Donggwang’s whereabouts. In 1987, a full-scale study was published with a subject, Where you go after throwing away? – Donggwang’s biography on his study and tactics (Jeokseon Temple Publishing Department). Recently, this book was re-published through the process of corrections and supplementations. And Donggwang’s keepsakes were donated to Geumjeong Middle School, Busan, which Beomeo Temple operated. Under such a changed reality, I would like to insert Donggwang’s life into the history of Yongseong. In a radical time, I let a seon practitioner, Donggwang who left fierce steps, practice, tactics, and propagation, stand on the stage of Modern Buddhist history.

본 고찰은 백용성의 전법의 외연을 확장시키려는 의도에서 나온 고찰이다. 지금껏 용성의 사상, 전법 및 계승 등에 대한 연구는 초보적인 단계에 머물 렀다. 이런 배경에서 본 고찰은 용성으로부터 전법을 받았던 東侊禪師의 생 애에 대한 기초적인 연구를 수행했다. 그런데 동광은 용성으로부터 전법게를 받았지만 용성의 제자로 인식되지 는 않았다. 한용운이 찬술한 1941년 해인사의 용성선사의 비문, 지관이 찬술 하여 1994년에 세워진 해인사 용성대종사의 비문에도 그의 법명은 찾을 수 없다. 동광은 범어사 3.1운동의 주역, 1920년대의 수좌, 중앙불전에서의 수학, 범 어사 및 경남 지역의 일대에서 포교활동 등의 행적을 남겼다. 그리고 동광의 행적은 여러 기록에 나온다. 본격적인 동광 자료집이 1987년,『버린 후엔 어 느 곳을 향하는가? - 동광 수도전법기』(적선사출판부)라는 제목으로 출간되 었다. 최근 이 책이 수정, 보완되어 출간되었다. 그리고 동광의 유품이 범어 사가 운영하는 부산 금정중학교에 기증되었다. 이런 변화된 현실하에서 필자는 동광의 생애를 발굴⋅정리하여 용성의 역 사에 편입시키고자 한다. 격동의 세월에서 수행, 전법, 포교라는 치열한 행적 을 보여준 동광이라는 수행자를 근현대 불교사의 무대에 올린다.
