본 논문은 봉선사에서 인담스님을 은사로 출가해 용성조사의 전법제자가 된 동암당(東庵堂) 성수(性洙) 선사의 생애와 사상을 조명한 연구 결과이다. 동암선사는 출가 전에는 신교육을 받고, 출가 후에는 수행에 전념했다. 용 성조사를 도와 독립운동에 참여하고, 해방 후에는 정화불사에 동참했다. 즉 동암선사는 부처님 가르침에 귀의해 수행하면서 대중 교화는 물론 불 교정화에 앞장서고 대한불교조계종의 초석을 놓았다. 독립운동에 참여하고 사회복지 구현에도 관심을 갖고 정진했다. 또한 오봉산 석굴암 중창불사의 뜻을 문도에 전하는 등 사회 참여와 불교발전에 기여했다. 본 논문에서는 평생 수행자 본분을 지키고 구도를 실천하며 살아온 동암 선사의 업적과 행장을 구체적으로 처음 조명했다. 그동안 동암 선사의 행 장을 조명할 수 있는 자료가 상당 부분 사라져 존재하고 있지 않기 때문이 다. 또한 현존하는 자료를 수집 정리하지 못한 상태였다. 여러 가지 어려운 점이 있었지만, 동암 선사의 생애와 사상을 살펴보고 향후 과제를 제시했다는 점에서 본 논문의 의미를 찾고자 한다. 본 논문의 1차 자료는 서울 성북구 녹야원에 있는 동암선사 비문과 조계종 총무원 자 료, 그리고 원적 당시 대한불교신문과 동아일보 등 언론 보도 내용 등을 참고했다. 이와 함께 동암선사를 실제 만났던 현존 인물들의 증언과 국가 기록원 등의 자료도 보충자료로 삼았다. 동암 선사는 평북 희천에서 출생해, 보통 과정의 신교육을 받았다. 평안 도는 일제강점기에 항일 의식이 팽배했던 곳으로 다른 지역에 비해 독립운 동이 활발한 고장이었다. 이 같은 분위기에서 자연스럽게 항일의식을 갖게 되고, 반일 항쟁에 가담했다 묘향산 보현사에 은거하게 된다. 보현사에서 출가해 1921년 양주 봉선사에서 인담 스님을 은사로 출가한 다. 1922년에 서울 대각사에서 백용성(白龍城) 조사에게 동암이란 법호를 수지하고 법제자가 된다. 용성 조사를 시봉하며 독립운동에 가담하고 약 10 년간 상해, 북간도, 일본을 오가며 수행과 독립운동을 병행한다. 해방이 되고 백범 김구 선생을 비롯한 임시정부 요인들의 귀국을 환영하 는 임시정부 봉영회를 구성하는 등 민족의식도 강했다. 1950∼60년대에는 효봉(曉峰), 동산(東山), 청담(靑潭) 스님과 함께 불교 정화운동에 적극 참여해 대한불교조계종 출범의 산파가 된다. 동암 선사는 정화불사에 필요한 재정을 조달하는 일에 탁월한 능력을 발 휘한다. 통합종단 출범 후에는 양양 낙산사 주지, 영주 부석사 주지, 선산 도리사 주지 등을 역임하며 사찰과 종단 안정에 기여한다. 사찰을 문중 소 유로 하지도 않았고, 주지 소임에 연연하지 않았다. 오직 수행과 전법에 몰두하고, 공심을 앞세웠다. 한국전쟁 당시 폐허가 된 오봉산 석굴암의 중창불사를 상좌 초안(超安) 스님에 당부했을 뿐이다. 말년에 선산 도리사 주지로 재직할 당시 상경해 정릉 녹야원에서 머물다 열반에 들었다. 동암 선사는 신학문을 익히고 독립운동에 참여했다 사찰에 은거한 것이 인연이 되어 출가했다. 평생 수행과 전법, 그리고 민족독립과 사회복지에 앞장선 선지식이다. 이번에 발표하는 논문이 동암 선사의 생애와 사상을 조명하는 첫 단추를 꿰는 계기가 되길 바라며, 향후 동암 선사에 대한 지속적인 자료수집과 연 구가 진행되길 기대한다.
