This paper analyzed the types of XX-hada verbs which came to be dropped out of use during the twentieth century. XX-hada verbs consist of two syllable Sino-Korean base XX and suffix -hada. We analyzed more than 10,000 types of XX-hada verbs used in Samcheolli Corpus containing magazine articles from 1929 to 1942 and found out that at least 30% of them came into disuse. We examined those disappeared verbs according to two perspectives: competition between synonyms and shifts of word base or suffix. There were two types of synonymic XX-hada verb pairs. The one shares one element of the base construction and the other consists of the same constituent but reversed order. Through the synonymic rivalry, the words in lower frequency tended to disappear. The changes of the word base or suffix is thought to be affected by the lexicalization of the two syllable nouns.

20세기 전반기에 쓰이던 1만 종 이상의 ‘2음절 한자어+하다’ 용언 중 30% 이상은 현재 쓰이지 않는다. 이 연구는 이들 용언의 소멸 원인을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 하며 이를 위해 잡지 『삼천리(1929～1942)』에 쓰인 용례를 분석하여 오늘날의 쓰임과 비교해 보았다. 20세기 전반기의 공시태에서 고빈도로 쓰이던 ‘2음절 한자어+하다’ 용언들은 대체로 오늘날까지도 그 쓰임을 유지하고 있었다. ‘2음절 한자어+하다’ 용언의 소멸 원인은 유의어 간의 경쟁,한문 문법의 영향 감소, 1음절 단위의 통사적 결합형에서 2음절 명사로의 어휘화, ‘-되-’, ‘-스럽-’ 등 기타 접미사들의 세력 확장 등과 밀접한 관련이 있었던 것으로 보인다.
