The present study reviews the bibliographical characteristics of, compares and contrasts the Korean translation of, and estimates, through the characteristics of Korean linguistics apparent in these documents, the date of transcription of HakCheong(學淸) (Mandarin Chinese: Xueqing; "Studying the Qing Language[i.e.,Mandarin Chinese]") and NiNiGwiSeong(你呢貴姓) (Mandarin Chinese: Nineguixing; "What Is Your Surname?"), which are Mandarin Chinese conversation guidebooks from Korea's Modernization period(1876-1910). Because HakCheong(學淸) and NiNiGwiSeong(你呢貴姓) are mutual variants, although the original Mandarin Chinese text is largely the same in these two works, there are some disparities: certain omissions and additions in the Chinese characters; many cases where dialogues not found in HakCheong(學淸) have been added to NiNiGwiSeong(你呢貴姓); and differences in the order of the dialogues. HakCheong(學淸) and NiNiGwiSeong(你呢貴姓) mainly exhibit literal translation. However, the latter document more noticeably tends to translate individual words or phrases based on a fixed and 1:1 correspondence regardless of the context. In these two works, there also are cases where the original Mandarin Chinese text is translated not into appropriate native Korean words or Sino-Korean words but transcribed as direct loanwords. In addition, both works use unique vocabulary not found in documents in other genres from the same period. Through aspects of translation and the characteristics of Korean linguistics, it was possible to confirm that HakCheong(學淸) had been transcribed earlier than NiNiGwiSeong(你呢貴姓). Judging from the transcription record on its cover and its linguistic characteristics, HakCheong(學淸) seems to have been transcribed around 1895; and NiNiGwiSeong(你呢貴姓) seems to have been transcribed some time during 1896-1907.

본고는 개화기 중국어 회화서인 『學淸』·『你呢貴姓』을 대상으로 하여 서지적인 특징을 검토하고 두 문헌의 번역 양상과 국어학적 특징을 살펴보았다. 『學淸』과 『你呢貴姓』은 서로 이본 관계에 있는 문헌으로 중국어 원문의 대화 내용은 대체적으로 일치하지만 약간의 글자 출입이 있다. 『學淸』에 없는 대화 내용이 『你呢貴姓』에 추가된 예가 확인되고, 『學淸』과 『你呢貴姓』의 대화의 순서가 다르게 나타나는 경우도 있다. 『學淸』과 『你呢貴姓』에서는 주로 직역 위주의 번역 양상을 보여주는데, 『你呢貴姓』이 『學淸』보다 하나의 단어나 구절에 대하여 문맥을 고려하지 않고 고정적으로 일대일로 대응시켜서 번역하는 현상이 더욱 두드러진다. 이 두 문헌에서는 중국어 원문에 대해서 적절한 고유어나 한자어로 번역하지 않고 음역하여 번역한 직접차용어의 예가 확인되며, 이 시기의 다른 장르의 문헌에서 보이지 않는 특이한 어휘가 쓰였다. 번역 양상과 국어학적 특징을 통해 『學淸』이 『你呢貴姓』보다 앞선 시기에 필사된 문헌임을 확인할 수 있었다. 『學淸』은 표지에 적힌 필사기와 언어적 특징을 통해 1895년 즈음에 필사된 것으로 보았으며, 『你呢貴姓』의 필사 시기는 1896년에서 1907년 사이로 추정하였다.
