This paper aims to examine historically lexical items in vernacular letters with a focus on Sino-Korean words, lexical variations of an adverb amuccolok(“아무쪼록”), stem compounds, mimetic expressions and names of things. Vocabulary in vernacular letters can supplement on the limited number of lexical items available in vernacular editions of Classical Chinese texts. It can also open up the research possibility for studying Sino-Korean words or mimetic expressions which have been rarely studied so far. Furthermore, vocabulary in vernacular letters can lay the ground work for further research on lexical history that take account of social variables such as region, sex or age. More importantly, lexical studies with vernacular letters enable us to trace the actual and natural use of lexicon—un-filtered through transliteration—and the historical changes.

본고는 언간 자료에 나타난 한자어, “아무쪼록”의 의미를 갖는 부사, 어간 복합어, 의태어, 물명 관련 어휘 등을 통해 사적인 연속선 상에서 언간 자료의 어휘가 갖는 가치를 드러내고자 한 것이다. 언간 자료의 어휘는 언해본의 제약된 어휘 자료를 보완해 줄 수 있으며, 그간 국어사에서 연구가 미흡했던 한자어나 의태어 등에 대한 연구의 가능성을 열어 준다. 또 그간 單線的으로 진행되었던 어휘사 연구가 지역, 성별, 연령 등 사회적 변인까지 고려한 重層的인 어휘사 연구로까지 나아갈 수 있는 바탕이 되기도 한다. 무엇보다 가장 중요한 것은 언간 자료의 어휘를 통해 16~19세기 언중들이 실제로 사용했던, 원문의 간섭을 받지 않은 자연스러운 국어 어휘의 모습과 그 변화를 추적할 수 있게 되었다는 점이다.
