This study examined how the demographic social characteristics of the elderly who has a spouse influenced their socioeconomic engagement, as well as whether their socioeconomic engagement had a mediating effect on their successful aging. Used herein were the data from the fourth (2012) additional survey data of Korean Retirement and Income Study of National Pension Research Institute. The findings of this study were outlined as follows. First, the younger, the lower educated, and the more provincially located the husband who lived separately from his children, the more he had socioeconomic engagement. Second, the younger, the more educated, and the more provincially located he was, the elderly person, who did not live together with his children, had a higher level of successful aging. Third, an elderly person's socioeconomic engagement had a mediating effect on his successful aging with increased explanatory power. To ensure a successful aging, jobs for low-educated elderly people should be developed, and the causes of having no socioeconomic engagement, as well as their desires should be identified. Also, for elderly people who do not live together with their children, such as elderly people-only households and single elderly person homes, should be given social care to live a healthy, stable life in communities.

본 연구는 유배우자 노인의 인구사회학적 특성이 경제적 사회참여에 어떻게 영향을 미치며, 경제적 사회참여가 성공적 노화에 매개효과가 있는지를 검증하였다. 자료는 국민연금연구원의 국민노후보장패널조사 4차(2012년) 부가조사 데이터를 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 남성이, 연령이 낮을수록, 교육수준이 낮을수록, 도에 거주할수록, 자녀와 동거하지 않을수록 경제적 사회참여를 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 연령이 낮을수록, 교육수준이 높을수록 도에 거주할수록, 자녀와 동거하지 않는 노인의 성공적 노후 수준이 높은 결과를 보였다. 셋째, 성공적 노후에 경제적 사회참여 변인을 투입한 결과 매개효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 노인의 성공적 노화를 위하여 학력수준이 낮은 노인이 참여할 수 있는 일자리 개발과 경제적 사회참여를 하지 않는 원인과 욕구를 파악하여야 한다. 또한 자녀와 동거하지 않는 노인을 위하여 노인가구 또는 독거노인이 지역사회 내에서 건강하고 안전하게 살 수 있는 사회적 돌봄이 필요하다.
