The novel Three-legged Dog by Junyeon Lee shows a most tragic life of children who are not protected by the society through the life of a three-legged dog named “Darae”. Through a study into the narrative structure of the novel, I have discussed, in the present thesis, the criticism of the inhumane city life and estrangement therein. The author, in turn, tries to emphasize the theme of the novel, value of life and love, in his own unique way. The plot is structured to develop through the external conflict towards the climactic clash, with the two narratives of Chulyee and Taera crossing each other. The novel also employs some episodes inserted in between so as to imply the motive and result of the actions. Taera’s efforts to find Darae actually are identical with those by Chulyee to protect it because Taera’s dog, Darae is later named Bokshilyee by Chulyee, who saved the dog’s life and claimed the dog was his. This way, the narrative transforms and expands to enhance tension and suspense, on its path to stress the theme of the story. A deeper study into the plot, however, discloses an initiation of the leading character, which gets to find out its true self and the world through a rite of passage which, in this story, is a shocking experience in earlier life. The ‘three legs’ is a symbolic device in the story, by which tragic experiences of identity loss, taboo, faith are imprinted into the memory of the leading character. After being aware of the world of disillusion and imperfect existence, the leading character grows up to restore its identity. The author strives to change the world that is becoming more and more inhumane through a character, that has become to recognize the value of love, hope and life and grown up to treasure such virtues. The growing-up of the dog Darae is a self-verification out of the inner agony that urges itself to get over estrangement and transform life. By employing such flexible plot, the author tries to bestow vigor and reality to the story, and specify the complexities of life, eventually embodying the characters’ actions and their meanings.

이준연의 장편동화 『세 발 강아지』는 강아지 다래를 통해 사회(어른)로부터 보호받지 못하는 어린이의 비극 적 삶을 다루며 사건과 행위를 중심으로 전개되는 분규발생과정형의 복합구성이다. 특히 ‘다래를 구하는 일’ 에서 ‘복실이를 지키는 일’로 이어지는 ‘줄거리 갈림점’은 서사의 극적 전환과 확장, 주제 강화(통일성), 탐색․ 구출․대결의 플롯으로 심화되는 계기성을 획득하며 통과제의(通過祭儀)를 통해 주인공 자신과 세계의 본성을 발견하도록 조직한 결정적 이니시에이션이다. 또한 ‘세 발 강아지’라는 육체는 이야기의 의미가 각인되는 ‘상징적 장(場)’으로 동일성 상실, 금기의 고통을 표 면화한다. 거짓과 죽음, 폭력과 환멸의 세계, 불완전한 존재를 인식하게 되면서 동일성(정체성) 회복, 도덕적․ 심리적 성장을 함축하는 작품 구성상의 주요 장치이다. 작가는 주인공을 통해 신체적 변모가 정서적 변화를 가져오는 과정, 즉 인생의 변화와 본질에 대한 탐구에 집 중하며 이를 인물과 환경(문화촌/판자촌)의 대응관계로 연결하여 정체성 탐구의 폭을 확장하였다. 작품 속에 나타나는 사회적․계층적 갈등, 물신숭배와 생명경시 등 도시의 부정적 인식은 진실이 부재한 세계( 도덕적 타락)에서 황폐화(세 발 강아지=철이=태라)되는 동심을 통해 형상화된다. 도시의 폭력성 인식, 사랑과 희망, 끈질긴 생명력으로 자기소외를 극복하려는 인물의 경험적 현실을 통해 작가는 인간성 자각과 탐구로써 삶을 변화시키고자 한다. 결국 가혹한 세계에서 상처 입은 동심을 회복하기 위한 힘겨운 과정을 작가는 탄력적인 플롯을 설정함으로써 비인간화되는 현대적 도시와 소외의식 비판, 생명과 사랑의 존귀함이라는 주제적 가치와 함께 박진감, 리얼리 티를 획득하고 인생의 복잡성을 구체화한다.
