This study made its start by raising a question about the major direction of previous discussions about the island metaphor in Ieodo by Lee Cheongjun being fixed to its utopian nature. The study also made an attempt at precisely re-reading a series of texts from a different perspective from previous discussions based on the fact that the significance of spatiality called an island can hardly be seen as a utopia in his novel. Even though 'Ieodo' is a conceptual space that is not real in the novel, there are points of disparity between the space and our old standpoints of utopia with very complex hierarchical differences inherent in them. They do not simply have spatial significance granted to them, and their episememe is in endless exclusive possession by other objects, which grants significance beyond that of material placeness at a narrative level. In the variation process of narrative significance paradigms, the metaphor of island shows the segmentation and intensification of certain direction from the central significance paradigm, in which process a utopian concept shows a semantically entangled relation rather than a separate image distinguished from the metaphor of island. The present study thus made an approach with a concept of heterotopian space in contrast to utopian space, attempted to provide explanations about the parts omitted or not fully explained in previous discussions, and explored new interpretative possibilities for the significance of island space in Lee's novel.

이 연구는 이상향으로서의 유토피아와 구별되는 혼재향(混在鄕)으로서의 헤테로토피아(heterotopia)를 제안 한 푸코의 공간이론을 원용, 이청준의 소설 「이어도」에 나타난 공간 메타포의 변주 과정을 추적하여 그 양 상 및 특징을 분석하고 있다. 이 작품에 관한 기존의 연구는 주로 이어도가 가진 유토피아적 성격에 초점을 맞추어 고착화되어 온 경향을 보인다. 그런데 소설 속에서 그려지는 이어도에는 유토피아에 대한 우리의 기존 관점들과 상위하는 지점들이 있으며 여기에는 매우 복합적인 위상적 차이가 내재해 있다는 점에서 쉽게 해소되지 않는 해석적 난점이 있어 온 것이 사실이다. 이에 이 글은 앞선 논의들의 일의적인 해석적 경향을 탈피하여 유토피아적 공간과 대비되 는 헤테로토피아적 공간이라는 개념으로 접근, 새로운 해석적 가능성을 타진하고 있다. 유토피아가 있을 수 없는 것을 인정하는 기반 위에서 안정되고 또한 그러한 전제 하에서만 열려 있는 공간이 라면, 헤테로토피아는 기구축된/고착된 질서를 교란시키는 불안정함 속에 ‘가능한 질서들의 단편들’이 혼종된 상태로 기존의 질서를 반영하면서 그것에 간섭하고 그것을 침식하는, 무엇다도 다르고 낯선 문제적 공간이다. 유토피아가 현존하는 공간에서의 위치를 담보하지 못한다는 점에서 관념적으로 수직적 위상을 갖는다면, 헤 테로토피아는 상대적으로 현실세계와 수평적/평행적 관계에 놓여있는 공간이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 헤테로토 피아의 기능은 ‘이소성(異所性)’, 즉 무엇보다도 다른 모든 공간과 구별되는 동시에 그것들과 불규칙적이고 가 변적으로 관계를 맺는다는 점에서 찾아진다. 소설 「이어도」는 제주도라는 구체적인 특정 공간을 배경으로 공동체적 삶속에서 이상향으로서의 유토피아 와 현실로서의 디스토피아의 길항을 가시화하고 있는데, 이 글은 이러한 긴장과 갈등의 관계 속에 틈입하여 그것들이 혼종된 상태로서 병존하는 양상을 헤테로토피아의 관점으로 분석, 기존의 관점으로 해명되지 않았 던 잉여 지점들에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도한다. 아울러 이청준 소설의 뚜렷한 미적 특질 가운데 하나인 겹구 조 양식이 현실과 허구의 혼재향으로서의 소설을 지향하는 작가 특유의 공간적 사유에 바탕하고 있다는 사실 을 밝히고 있다.
