This study examines variations in the depictions of the character Cheo Yong from its origin in the traditional tales of the Silla Dynasty to representation of his namesake as the detective in the OCN cable channel series: The Ghost Seeing Detective. In both cases, it is argued that the protagonist as an avenger of evil remains somewhat isolated as a stranger from society. However, one major difference between representations of the hero in the traditional tales was that Cheo Yong solved problems through tolerance and enlightenment, whereas, in the contemporary television series, the character solves problems through communication and trust. Thus, the traditional character, modernized as an allegorical figure, represents the way that problems can be solved in contemporary society.

본고에서는 처용이 象徵하는 바가 어떠한 모습이건 간에 그는 항상 타자로서 存在하고 있다는 것에 着眼하여 그 변주양상을 연구하고자 하였다. 타자이지만 해결사였던 처용설화의 ‘처용’의 모습이 현대에 와서 어떻게 재편되었는지를 tvN 채널에서 방영된 <귀신 보는 형사, 처용>에 재현된 처용의 모습을 통해 살 펴보았다. 처용설화에서 처용은 역신에 의해 병든 사회를 관용과 해탈의 태도로 물리쳐 사회의 병폐를 해결해주는 해결사가 된다. 현 시대에도 여전히 사람들은 병들어 가는 사회 속에서 불안감을 느낀다. 그리고 이를 벗어나게 해 줄 해결사 를 원한다. 현대에 새롭게 재해석된 처용의 변주 양상에서는 ‘관용과 해탈’ 대신 ‘소통과 믿음’이라는 키워드를 읽어낼 수 있다. 이는 현대사회에 만연한 폐단을 해결할 메타포로 읽을 수 읽을 것이며 그것에 의의를 둔다.
