In the late 1990s, the Korean horror genre that was begun with the hit horror films, “Ghost Story Series of Girls’High School” and “Ring,” etc. has been well- established through the popularzing of the cultural content of films, TV and the Internet-novel, etc. Actually, the history of these Korean Ghost stories has a longer duration. The culture of the Ghost-story, wherein one enjoys the scary stories introduced from Japan during the Japanese colonial period in the 1930s, is already generally recognized. However, the manner and timing of the settlement of the Japanese “ghost story” were not clear so specifically at the time, This paper reviews the concept of the word “ghost story” in Korea during the colonial time period as being the first step of the investigation, and reveals the facts of the process of the acceptance of the “ghost story.” The 「Dae-han Maeilshinbo」daily newspaper (1904-1910) that was published before the Japanese annexation of Korea was renamed as 「Maeilshinbo」, serving as an organ for the Japanese Government General after the Japanese annexation of Korea. With Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910, The concept of ‘ghost stories’ from these news papers was transformed into a “scary stories” which ghosts appeared from the meaning of “intolerable story” and “baseless story”. In this background, there was a context the propaganda that revealed artful political inclinations of the Japanese empire that tried to acquire not only the intellectual classes but also populace readers through the pleasure of reading of the ‘ghost stories’ which looked like non-relationships with any politics. In other words, these ghost stories was inserted in the Korean language newspaper published with political purpose by the Japanese empire, the Japanese cultural could be entered spontaneously without any aversion to the pure living customs and culture of Korean people.
