The authors of this study hypothesized that “writing comments” would be beneficial to advancing college students’ composition skills. We therefore created a teaching-learning model based on comment writing and applied it to an actual class. This paper is a report on the results and educational meanings of that experiment. There have been numerous studies explaining the effectiveness of “comment writing” as an instruction method in “improving students’ cognitive and metacognitive abilities, raising academic motivation, improving students’ self-esteem,” etc. The comment writing teaching-learning model for this study comprised six steps: “writing a first draft, lesson on comment writing, instructor demonstration, comment writing practice, peer comment writing, and revision.” After applying this model in a real college writing class, we analyzed the first drafts and revisions of several students’ essays. We also administered a survey to the students about what kind of influence the comment writing class had on their own writing. As to the contents of the students’ compositions, the topics were clearer and the evidence and examples were more abundant. The organization of the students’ essays was more structured overall and the paragraphs were better linked in subtle ways. As for articulation, the sentences structures were more correct and there were less spelling and spacing mistakes. After analyzing the surveys, we found that the students had more confidence about their own writing skills after take the comment writing class. They had a greater grasp on the basics of composition, and they were able to focus more on their intended audience when writing a composition. Also, they were able to judge their compositions more objectively, advance their critical abilities and responsibilities, and evaluate compositions in a more correct manner. The students claimed to have gained a base to help them effectively complete assignments in future classes and to have established a habit of revision

본 연구는 ‘논평 쓰기’가 대학생들의 글쓰기 능력 신장에 도움을 줄 것으로 판단하여 논평 쓰기를 중심으로 한 대학 작문 교수-학습 모형을 설계하여 실제 수업 현장에 적용한 후, 그 결과 및 교육적 의의를 밝히는 데에 목적이 있다. ‘논평 쓰기’는 ‘학습자들의 인지적, 초인지적 능력 및 학습 동기, 자아 존중감 향상’ 등과 같은 다양한 측면에서 효과적인 교육 방법이라는 연구 결과가 있어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 논평 모형 설계 지침을 토대로 ‘초고쓰기→논평 쓰기 관련 강의→교사 시범→논평 쓰기 연습→동료 논평 쓰기→고쳐쓰기’ 단계로 이루어진 논평 쓰기 교수-학습 모형을 설계한 후 실제 대학 작문 수업에 적용하였고, 논설문 쓰기에 대한 학생들의 초고 및 고쳐 쓴 몇 가지 사례의 글을 분석하였다. 또한 논평 쓰기 수업이 자신의 글쓰기에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지에 대한 설문지를 분석하였다. 학생 글 분석 결과, 내용 면에서 주제가 명확해졌고, 근거 또한 풍부해졌으며, 조직 면에서 글 전체가 체계적인 구조를 지니게 되었고 단락과 단락이 긴밀하게 연결되어 있었다. 또한 표현 면에서 문장 표현이 정확해졌고 맞춤법 및 띄어쓰기도 개선된 것을 알 수 있었다. 설문지 분석 결과, 학습자들은 논평 쓰기 수업을 통해 글에 대한 자신감을 향상시킬 수 있었고, 글쓰기의 기본적인 틀을 마련할 수 있었으며, 독자를 고려하는 글쓰기를 실천할 수 있었다고 하였다. 또한 자신의 글에 대해 객관적인 판단을 할 수 있게 되었고, 글에 대한 비판적 안목과 책임감이 향상되었으며, 글에 대한 올바른 평가가 가능하게 되었다고 응답하였다. 논평 쓰기 수업을 통해 앞으로 교양 및 전공 수업에서 효과적인 과제 수행을 할 수 있는 기초를 마련할 수 있었고, 고쳐 쓰기 습관 또한 기를 수 있게 되었다고 하였다.
