Advanced cities around the world use public uniforms to aid establishment of city identity and improvement of city image. This study aims to examine the status of uniform designs and analyze differences in the image evaluation of uniforms of women public service staff in the city halls of Seoul and Gwangju. The methodology was first to review city image and public uniforms, public uniforms cases at home and abroad, and the status of uniforms worn in the public service office of local governments, and then to conduct a questionnaire survey with a total of 200 citizens in Seoul and Gwangju to evaluate the image of public service staff uniforms at City Hall. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed and returned for the final analysis and the analyzed data was collected using the SPSS for windows 20.0 statistics package. The results are as follows. First, the uniform images of Seoul and Gwangju was classified into five categories: activity, symbolism, attention, trust, and aesthetics. Second, differences in the image evaluation of city uniforms were analyzed according to demographic characteristics. For the image of Seoul's public service uniforms, while symbolism and attention were highly evaluated, activity and aesthetics were evaluated relatively low according to age, education, and occupation. There was a statistically significant difference in all aesthetics factors according to respondents' age, education, and occupation. For the image of Gwangju's public service uniforms, while activity, attention, and trust were highly evaluated, symbolism and aesthetics were evaluated relatively low according to respondents' age, education, and occupation. There was a significant difference in trust and attention according to education and a significant difference in activity according to occupation but no significant difference was found according to age.

세계 선진 도시들은 도시 정체성 확립과 도시 이미지 제고를 위한 전략적 요소로 공공유니폼을 활용하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 서울특별시와 광주광역시의 시청 민원실 여직원이 착용하고 있는 유니폼을 대상으로 유니폼 디자인 현황을 살펴보고, 유니폼의 이미지 평가 차이를 분석하는데 있다. 연구 방법은 도시 이미지와 공공유니폼, 국내ㆍ외 공공유니폼 사례, 지자체 시청 민원실 유니폼 착용 현황을 살펴본 다음, 시청 민원실 유니폼 이미지 평가를 위해 서울시와 광주시 시민 총 200명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 총 200부의 설문지를 배포ㆍ회수하여 최종 분석에 사용하였으며, 수집된 자료의 분석을 위해 SPSS for windows 20.0 통계 패키지를 이용하였다. 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 서울시와 광주시의 유니폼 이미지는 활동성, 상징성, 주목성, 신뢰성, 심미성 등의 5개 요인으로 분류되었다. 둘째, 인구통계적 특성에 따른 시청 유니폼 이미지 평가의 차이를 분석한 결과, 서울시 시청 민원실 유니폼 이미지는 전체적으로 5개 이미지 요인에 대해 연령, 학력, 직업별로 상징성, 주목성은 높게 평가된 반면, 상대적으로 활동성, 심미성이 낮게 평가되었으며, 응답자들의 연령, 학력, 직업에 따라 심미성 요인이 모두 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 광주시 시청 민원실 유니폼 이미지는 응답자들의 연령, 학력, 직업별로 활동성, 주목성, 신뢰성은 높게 평가된 반면, 상대적으로 상징성, 심미성이 낮게 평가되었으며, 학력에 따라 신뢰성, 주목성이, 직업에 따라 활동성이 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났고 연령에 따라서는 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다.
