Our academia early has noticed the thoughts of Unyang(雲養) Kim Yunsik; the theory of Eastern moral and western material and the theory of enlightenment. The reason isn't only because he had a wide range of activities and he wrote many important documents but also because he tried to achieve the enlightenment in keeping with the spiritual values of Confucianism. Traditionally, in terms of the theory of moral and material unity It is impossible to combine Eastern moral and Western material like Kim Yunsik. Because Eastern moral and Western material are heterogeneous with each other, the combination produces a logical contradiction. This article is investigated his reasoning which combined Eastern moral and Western material and how he resolved the contradiction. Also His theory of Eastern moral and western material is ambiguous with his theory of enlightenment. The enlightenment in that time meant to work for current affairs. But in current affairs we can't separate Eastern moral and western material. Then Kim Yunsik refined how have been logical to think this problem? This study is investigated Eastern moral, western material, enlightenment and current affairs with a focus on the problem.

雲養 金允植(1835～1922)의 東道西器論과 開化論은 일찍부터 학계의 주목 을 받았다. 그것은 운양의 활동 범위가 넓고 운양이 작성한 중요 문서가 많기 때문 이기도 하지만, 운양이 추구한 길이 급박하게 개화에 경도된 지식인들이나 경직된 수구적 지식인들과 달리 유교의 정신적 가치를 지켜가면서 개화를 이루고자 했기 때문이기도 하다. 전통적으로 道와 器는 일치된다는 道器合一의 관점에서 보면, 김윤식처럼 도와 기를 분리시켜 동도와 서기라는 이질적 범주를 하나로 묶는다는 것 자체가 불가능하다. 논리적 모순이 발생하기 때문이다. 본고는 김윤식이 어떤 사유의 과정을 거쳐서 동도와 서기를 하나로 연계시켰으며, 그 논리적 모순을 어 떻게 해소했는지 고찰하였다. 또 김윤식이 견지한 동도서기론은 그가 주장한 개화론, 즉 開化란 時務에 힘쓰 는 것이라고 했던 개화론과도 논리적 관계가 모호하다. 그 당시의 개화, 즉 時務 에는 東道의 범주에 드는 것과 西器의 범주에 드는 것이 혼재되어 있었기 때문이 다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제에 초점을 맞추어 운양 김윤식의 사유 속에서 ‘동도’ ‘서 기’ ‘개화’ ‘시무’의 개념 및 그 상호 관계를 고찰하였다.
