Most of the label designs found in Chinese generic medicine package are usually written in Chinese characters. This may cause improper medicine intake by visually impaired, elders who have poor eyesight, children as well as foreigners. Thus, there is a need to apply the principle of universal design to China's generic medicine package design. After observing the current trend in Chinese medicines' package design and working on a survey on package labels, this study aims to create a design improvement plan for consumers to easily and accurately understand important information they need to know about the medicines. Based on the literatures on the concept of Universal Design and the characteristics of generic medicines, a comparative analysis of Chinese and Korean generic medicine's package was done. Then a survey on the consumers' opinion on Chinese medicine was carried out. Improvements on the package label design were proposed through a quantitative evaluation that was based on the survey result. The result of the study are as follows: First, the name of the drug, its purpose, effectivity, dosage, content and other important information should be written in the front side of the package where they can easily be read. Second, the font size most preferred by the respondents is 10, and that any font size similar to or exceeding this can easily be read and understood by consumers. Lastly, the use of illustration helps people choose the right medicine they need when purchasing and taking medicines.

중국의 일반 의약품 패키지의 라벨디자인은 대부분 문자위주로 표기하고 있어 어린아이, 노인, 외국인 등 의 소비자들에게 오·남용 위험성이 높아 일반 의약 품 패키지 디자인에 유니버설 디자인의 적용이 요구 된다. 본 연구는 중국 의약품 패키지디자인의 현황을 살 펴보고, 기재사항 조사를 통하여 소비자가 반드시 알 아야 할 중요한 정보를 쉽게 이해하고 명확하게 이해 할 수 있도록 개선방안을 마련하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 문헌자료를 통하여 유니버설디자인 개 념과 정의, 일반 의약품의 패키지 특성을 바탕으로 중국의 일반 의약품 패키지와 한국의 일반 의약품 패 키지를 비교 분석하고, 중국 일반 의약품의 패키지를 선정 설문 조사에 따른 정량적 평가를 통하여 패키지 디자인 라벨 표기 사항의 개선방향을 도출한다. 연구 결과는 첫째, 의약품 명칭, 주요효능 및 효과, 용법 및 용량 등 선호도 높은 사항의 위치를 패키지 앞면에 정보를 인지하기 쉬운 위치에 알아보기 쉽도 록 표기해야 한다. 둘째, 글자 크기별 가독성을 대상 자들이 가장 선호하는 글자 크기는 10포인트였고, 또 한 10포인트부터 적힌 기제사항을 가장 쉽게 읽고 이 해할 수 있었다. 셋째, 일러스트레이션 등을 통해 의약품 구매, 복용 시에 빠르고 정확 한 선택을 할 수 있게 도움을 얻는다는 사실을 알 수 있었다.
