Yangzhou Huafanglu : A Collection of a Painted Boat in Yangzhou(揚州畵舫錄) is a handwritten note (筆記) by Li Dou (李斗) about Yangzhou(揚州), an important city in the Qing empire. Until quite recently this book has primarily been cited as a historical source. This paper will analyze this text as a reading of Yangzhou materialized in the consciousness of an individual author as well as in the intersubjective consciousness of his contemporaries. This paper examines the various maps and scenery visualized by the author and its significance. The Yangzhou(揚州) in Yangzhou Huafanglu : A Collection of a Painted Boat in Yangzhou(揚州畵舫 錄) considers the spatial location of the canal through the imagery of a ‘painted boat(畵舫)' rather than examining Yangzhou in its entirety as a geographical space. Yangzhou is demarcated by a spatial line which is drawn by the feelings, experiences, and intentions of author. The text offers a new reading of Yangzhou's spaces which he personalizes through his own traces by walking around the city, making associations with the place, as well as creating detours. Li Dou's writings should be read as structurally dynamic with depth, density, and space, which is temporalized descriptively and through structural recollections. Yangzhou Huafanglu : A Collection of a Painted Boat in Yangzhou(揚州畵舫錄) encompasses people from the past and present, diverse landscapes, as well as their locations. The text can be seen as holistic because it features attractions of Yangzhou and its people, who created such attractions along the canal. The beautiful boat(畵舫) that sails thorugh the city and brings them all to life. Yangzhou is described as a city of gardens, of scholars and artists, open, dynamic, and diversity, a city of communication and exchange characterized by dedication and moderation, and a city of ethics based on the tenets of chivalry and solidarity as well as a place with its own history and culture featuring unique names for its attractions. This paper asserts that the author of Yangzhou Huafanglu : A Collection of Painted Boat in Yangzhou(揚州畵舫錄) represents the city of Yangzhou as a ‘beautiful boat of civilization' with mythical cultural heroes and can be regarded as a tribute to Yangzhou, the hometown of the author.

《양주화방록》은 청대 도시, ‘양주’에 관한 이두(李斗)의 필기(筆記)이다. 지금까지 《양주화방록》은 역사 사료로서 가치 때문에 주로 ‘부분’으로 인용되어 쓰여왔다. 이 글에서는 이왕의 이용 방법과 달리 《양주화방록》을 온전한 《양주화방록》 자신으로서 읽기, 여러 개의 양주 가운데 18세기의 어느 작자 혹은 그가 속한 동시대 공동체의 상호주관적 의식 속에 형상화된 ‘하나’의 양주 이야기로서 읽기를 시도했고, 그를 통해 《양주화방록》이 가시화하고 있는 양주의 지도와 경관, 그것이 품고 있는 이미지와 의미들에 대해 살펴보았다. 《양주화방록》의 양주는 지리적 공간으로서나 지각공간으로서나 양주 전체를 지시하기보다는 화방의 수로를 따라 오려내어진 공간이다. 《양주화방록》은 화방―아름다운 배― 수로를 따라 양주의 장소들과 그것을 창조해 온 사람들을 만나는 과정을 통해, 또 그것들 간의 내적 계보화를 통해, 양주를 어떤 총체적인 형상으로 떠오르게 한다. 《양주화방록》의 양주는 자신의 경관에 새겨진 이름들을 통해 원림과 학자와 예술가의 도시, 개방적이고 다양성의 활력이 넘치는 도시, 헌신과 절제가 있는 도시, 도덕적 선행과 의협적 연대의 도시, 고유의 문화적 계보를 가진 도시 등의 형상으로 나타난다. 작자는 화방 수로의 양주를 문화적 영웅의 신화를 가진 ‘아름다운 문명의 배’로 은유하려는 듯하며, 《양주화방록》은 자신의 진정한 고향, 양주에게 바치는 헌사에 다름 아니다.
