This study analyzes how to embody the modernity and melancholy in Akutagawa’s novels such as 『Kappa(河童)』 and 『A Gear Wheel』. He wrought the novels in the times when there was a serious mismatch between idea and phenomenon. The Western style capitalism provided Japan with the significant economic development. However, it also caused the social inequality, the snobbism and the retrogression of spirituality, which consequently led to an unbalance between spirit and phenomenon. The main features of the times were the separation between spirituality and everyday life, a spread of melancholic sentiment and the loss of authenticity. These features let Akutagqwa first take the allegory which continuously delay the meanings of the things within his world of literature. His strategy of melancholy was to embody things that he had never owned or lost in his novels through allegorical rhetoric as if he had lost in the past. His ultimate goal was to discover authentic Dasein or existential Self which had nothing to do with the inherent family difficulties and the suicide. The novelist believed that he could find his authentic Dasein by changing the realities of life into aesthetic view of life. Akutagqwa attempted to converge social modernity which required a high level of rationality into aesthetic modernity which led to the Dionysiac life.

본고는 아쿠타가와의 소설 『갓파』와 『톱니바퀴』에 모더니티와 멜랑콜리가 어떤 양상으로 표현되었는지를 분석하였다 . 작가는 서구자본주의 유입으로 인해 물질문명의 혜택을 받았지만 불평등과 속물성의 확산, 그리고 정신문명의 정체로 서구 자본주의라는 장밋빛 이념과 어두운 사회현실이라는 현상이 불일치를 보이는 시대에 작품 활동을 하였다. 이러한 시대의 특징은 이념과 현상의 분리, 시대적 정조로서 멜랑콜리의 확산, 진정성의 상실을 들 수 있다. 따라서 아쿠타가와의 멜랑콜리는 이러한 시대적 특성이 반영되어 그의 문학 공간에서 의미의 확정성이 계속 지연되는 알레고리의 형식을 취한다. 그의 멜랑콜리 전략은 사회적 모더니티 하에서 소유한 적도 상실한 적도 없는 대상을 알레고리를 통해 상실된 것처럼 문학적 공간에 형상화 하는 것이다. 이는 개인의 태생적 비극이나 자살시도와 상관없이 작가가 지향하는 것은 본래적 자아 혹은 실존적 자아의 발견이었으며 작가는 현실적 주체를 미적 주체로 전환함으로써 본래적 자아를 찾을 수 있다고 본 것이다. 아쿠타가와는 합리적이고 고도의 이성이 요구되는 사회적 모더니티를 디오니소스적이고 미적인 삶을 살 수 있는 미적 모더니티로 바꾸려는 시도를 하고 있다.
