This article is on the honorific systems of Japanese and Vietnamese. The following facts were clarified in this study. The honorific system of Japanese contains exalted forms, two types of humble forms, and polite forms, whereas that of Vietnamese contains exalted forms, one type of humble forms, and polite forms. The honorific system of Japanese was developed on verbs, while that of Vietnamese was on prefixes and proverbs. As to polite forms, while Japanese ones were totally grammaticalized, Vietnamese ones keep their morph because of the characteristic as an isolating language. The writing by chữ nôm also took part of this phenomenon. And Vietnamese does not have exalted forms made by feeling of awe against the nature and God.

일본어

本稿は日本語とベトナム語の敬語体系を概観し、その共通点と相違点について指摘した後にその要 因を考察したもの である。 日本語は尊敬語・謙譲語Ⅰ・謙譲語Ⅱ・丁寧語という体系を持つのに対し、ベトナム語は日本語でい うところの謙譲 語Ⅰを欠いており、尊敬語・謙譲語Ⅱにしても日本語が主に動詞において著しい発達を示すのに対 し、ベトナム語では 接頭辞と代名詞において発達していることを見た。丁寧語に関してはベトナム語は日本語が持つよ うな文体的対立を 持っておらず、完全な文であれば常に登場するというものではないことを見た。その中身に関して は、日本語の丁寧語 が高度に文法化されたものであるのに対し、ベトナム語では文法化は見られるものの、形態素の境 界がはっきりと示さ れており、意味のみが概念語から機能語へとシフトしていることが観察された。 この相違点を生ぜしめた要因として、筆者は言語類型の相違およびその表記法の相違、そして自然 や神への畏怖の念 から生じた｢おのずからそのようになる｣という表現が日本語において豊富な敬語を産み出したこと を指摘した。
