Present Korean Protestant churches are scarce of the Bible-centered preaching. A proper interpretation of the Bible is prerequisite to the Bible-centered preaching. For John Flavel(ca. 1630-1691), one of the most influential Puritan pastors in his time, exegesis served as the foundation for doctrinal formulation on all matters of faith and life. Using the literal-grammatical exegesis as the first rule of biblical interpretation, he then sought to define the scope of the text and consulted interpretations from patristic, medieval, as well as the Reformers and his orthodox contemporaries. Though Flavel pursued continuity with the best of the tradition, he did not allow tradition to hold the same authority that it did in the older Scholasticism. Holding the superiority of Scripture over the authority of the church, Flavel firmly stands in the Reformation tradition of sola Scriptura. The basic rules of interpretation that Flavel actually used was the foundation for his Bible-centered preaching. Flavel’s rules of interpretation may be a challenge and guide for Korean pastors struggling to recover the Bible-centered preaching.

오늘날 한국교회 많은 설교자들은 성경 중심의 설교를 하지 않고 있다. 성경의 핵심을 드러내는 성경 중심의 설교를 하기 위해서는 먼저 성경을 올바로 해석해야 한다. 17세기 청교도 John Flavel(1630년경~1691년)에게 있어서 성경 석의는 신앙과 삶의 모든 문제들에 대한 교리를 형성하는 기초였다. Flavel이 성경 해석을 할 때 염두에 두었던 규칙은 세 가지였다. 첫째, 문자적-문법적 석의, 둘째, 본문의 의도 살피기, 셋째, 석의학자들의 도움 받기가 그것들이다. Flavel은 동시대 정통파 신학자들의 연구의 도움을 받을 뿐만 아니라 초대교회 교부들과 중세신학자들, 그리고 종교개혁자들의 연구를 참고했다. 그럼으로써 건전한 전통과의 유대를 가지면서도 전통이 중세 스콜라주의에서 가졌던 것과 동일한 권위적 지위를 인정하지는 않았다. Flavel은 성경의 권위가 교회의 권위보다 우월함을 고백함으로 ‘오직 성경’이라는 종교개혁의 전통에 확고히 서있었다. Flavel의 이런 성경 해석 규칙은 그가 청중의 필요를 고려하면서도 성경의 핵심을 드러내는 성경 중심의 설교를 선포할 수 있었던 바탕이라 볼 수 있다. Flavel의 성경 해석 규칙들이 성경 중심의 설교를 회복하기 위해 힘쓰고 있는 오늘날 한국교회 목회자들에게 신선한 도전과 지침이 되기를 바란다.
