This paper makes a series of arguments about a new direction for expository preaching that culminate in its thesis: Jonathan Edwards’s “sense of the heart” as a principle of a new kind of perception or spiritual sensation given by the Spirit of God in regeneration, in which a believer tastes or sees God’s beauty, can provide expository preaching with a meaningful direction for the effective preaching. The sense of the heart refers to a way of appreciating and relating to God. This is the disposition or habit that the Holy Spirit gives saints to enable them to see God's infinite beauty and glory. Edwards argues that people need a new heart and a new spirit and that in order to have a new “heart of flesh,” an outside force must initiate the change. This dissertation defines this outside force as a divine and supernatural light, namely the work of the Holy Spirit. When this light shines on the saints’ sense of the heart, which the Holy Spirit gives them in regeneration they can experience God’s beauty. Contemporary expository preachers should stir up their congregants’ “holy affections” through their sense of the heart, in order to affect the whole person and open up listeners to the possibility of life change in their preaching.

이 논문은 Jonathan Edwards의 마음의 감각 개념과 그의 설교학적 미학을 통해 강해 설교가 앞으로 나아가야 할 새로운 방향성을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. Edwards에게 마음의 감각은 중생할 때 성령에 의해 주어지는 일종의 영적 감각 또는 지각인데, 하나님의 아름다움에 대한 실제적인 경험을 의미한다. Edwards에 의하면, 새 마음과 새 영을 얻기 위해서는 외부에서 부어지는 힘이 필요한데, 그것은 바로 거룩하고 초월적인 성령의 빛이다. Edwards는 설교에 있어서 적용을 가능하게 하는 것이 바로 이러한 하나님의 아름다움에 대한 새로운 감각이라고 하였다. 아름다움이야말로 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 열정적인 행위의 근거로서, 일단 하나님의 아름다움을 경험하면 근본적인 감정과 정서의 변화를 초래할 수 있다는 것이다. 마음의 감각이 청중들의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있는 이유는 하나님의 아름다움에 대한 영적 경험이 청중들 안에서 거룩함을 향한 새로운 성향을 만들어 내기 때문이다. 오늘날 강해설교자들은 성령께 스스로를 전적으로 위탁하면서 동시에 청중들의 마음의 감각을 고취시키는데 예리한 관심을 기울여야 한다.
