Some contemporary homileticians have a negative view about sermon application, and assert that if preachers interpret the Scriptures correctly and declare the God’s message to their congregation, He will give to each audience member something to be properly applied in their lives. However, another group of homileticians argue for the importance of sermon application and strongly assert the inevitability of sermon application. The necessity of the sermon’s application should be applicable to the sermon hearers. If a preacher wants his sermon to be applicable to his hearers, that sermon should also be appropriate to the hearer’s lives. This is called ‘practical applicability’. Consequently, to understand the validity of the things realized is called ‘functional applicability’. In order for a sermon to applicable in its application to the audience, it needs to be preached as the Word of God. The purpose of preaching and its application is the transformation of the audience. The preacher should specifically consider how the message is expected to change the lives in the diverse range of his audience. The maturity of the audience, through applicable sermon application, will determine the changes in values, personality and behavior. Particularly, changes in values will be a life of meditation concerning the future, changes in personality will be a life of self-denial and changes in behavior will be a positive life of bearing one’s cross. The ultimate purpose of the sermon is to achieve, for the audience through sermon application, a change in values, personality and behavior of the audience. This is to the of glorify God, and to enjoy Him and His presence forever. A life of glorify to God is transformed by applicable or appropriate sermon application. Finally, the purpose and direction of the audience’s practical life, through sermon application, should be to glorify God forever.

적용에 대한 부정적인 시각을 가진 학자들은, 설교자가 성경 본문을 잘 해석해서 선포하기만 하 면 하나님께서 각 청중에게 적절하게 적용해 주신다고 주장한다. 반면에 설교에서 적용은 반드 시 필요하다고 주장하는 학자들은, 적용은 실제로 하나님의 일이지만 그럼에도 설교자는 적용 하는 일을 해야 한다면서 적용의 필연성을 말한다. 그리고 적용의 필연성은 물론, 그 적용이 청 중에게 적실성이 있어야 한다. 어떤 것이 청중에게 적실하기 위해서는 그것이 무엇이든 청중의 삶에 타당한 것이어야 하는데, 이것을 ‘실제적 적실성’이라 한다. 또한 그것의 타당성을 깨달아 이해해야 하는 것을 ‘기능적 적실성’이라고 한다. 설교가 청중에게 들려지는 말씀이 되도록 하 는 것이 적실한 적용이다. 설교와 적용의 목적은 청중의 변화에 있다. 따라서 설교자는 그 메시지가 청중의 어떤 변화를 의도하는지 변화의 영역을 구체적으로 고려해야 한다. 적실한 적용을 통한 청중의 변화는 가치 관의 변화, 성품의 변화 그리고 행동의 변화로 세분화 할 수 있다. 특히 적용으로 인한 가치관의 변화는 내세를 묵상하는 삶을 살아갈 수 있으며, 또한 성품의 변화는 자기 부정의 삶을 살아갈 수 있고, 행동의 변화는 십자가를 지는 적극적인 삶으로 드러나게 되는 것이다. 그러한 변화된 모습의 궁극적인 목적은 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 살아가도록 하는 것이다. 설교자는 이러 한 변화의 구체적인 영역을 목표한 적용을 시도할 수 있다. 청중이 설교의 적실성이 있는 적용으로 가치관과 성품 그리고 행동이 변화 되어 올바른 삶을 살 게 된다면, 그로인해 이루고자 하는 궁극적인 목적은 무엇인가? 그것은 하나님을 영화롭게 하 며 영원토록 그를 즐거워하는 것이다. 적실한 설교 적용을 통해 청중이 변화된 삶을 살아가야 하는데 그것이 바로 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶이다. 결국 설교 적용을 통해 변화된 청중의 실 천적인 삶의 목적과 방향은 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 삶으로 귀결되어야 한다.
