Poster design was created as the modern society was formed. With the increase of mass production and communication with the public, the importance of posters increased and posters could be actively made as the technology to replicate them in large quantities developed. One of the remarkable features in early modern poster design is the simplification of images and silhouette technique is the expression usefully utilized in such simplification. The silhouette technique originated from the shadow portrait and refers to a method of expressing with the contour of a form. It can emphasize the outer form, highlight lines by expressing the inside with the plane, attract the attention and stimulate the curiosity of the beholder with flat feelings and margins. The silhouette technique shown in modern poster design was the adequate expression method in either the production method of mass- production or effective communication. The silhouette technique gave the approach of modern expression method suitable for mass production to art posters, curve and flatness to posters of Art Nouveau style and a clue of geometric modeling expression to posters of the secession school. In addition, it was used for symbolization of images in Sachplakat style and as the expression method of intuitive meaning delivery in the poster of the World War. It was useful for creating and experimenting a new approach appropriate for the modern society beyond realistic form expression. Through the silhouette technique shown in early modern poster design, we can see the process in which the area of design is settled and changed depending on the formation and changes of modern society. The formation of the modern expression method unlike the past and background of modern design to be completed in the future can be seen.

포스터 디자인은 근대 사회의 형성에 따라 생성되었다. 대량생산과 대중과의 커뮤니케이션 증 가에 따라 포스터에 대한 중요성이 확대되고 대량으로 복제될 수 있는 기술이 발달되면서 더욱 활발히 제작될 수 있었다. 근대 초기 포스터 디자인에 있어 눈에 띄는 특징 중 하나는 이미지의 간략화며 실루엣 기법은 이러한 간략화에 유용하게 쓰인 표현법이다. 실루엣 기법은 그림자 초상화에서 시작된 것으로 형태의 윤곽으로 표현하는 방식을 말한다. 형태 외곽을 강조하고 내부는 평면으로 표현하여 선 을 강조하고 평면적인 느낌과 여백으로 보는 사람의 이목을 끌고 호기심을 자극시킬 수 있다. 근대 포스터 디자인에 나타나는 실루엣 기법은 대량생산의 제작방식에 있어서나 효율적인 커 뮤니케이션에 있어서 적절한 표현방법이었다. 실루엣 기법은 예술적 포스터에서는 대량생산에 적합한 근대적인 표현 방식의 접근을, 아르누 보 양식의 포스터에서는 곡선과 평면성을, 분리파의 포스터에서는 기하학적 조형표현의 실마 리를 주었다. 또 자크플라카트 양식에서는 이미지의 기호화에, 세계대전의 포스터에서는 직관 적인 의미 전달의 표현 방식으로 쓰였다. 사실적인 형태 표현에서 벗어나 근대 사회에 알맞은 새로운 방식을 만들고 실험하는데 유용하게 쓰인 것이다. 근대 초기 포스터 디자인에 나타난 실루엣 기법을 통해 근대 사회의 형성과 변화에 따라 디자 인의 영역이 자리 잡고 변화하는 과정을 알 수 있다. 과거와는 다른근대적 표현 방법의 형성과 이후에 완성될 모던 디자인의 배경을 알 수 있는 것이다.
