This is a case study on reading education for school sport club players. The purpose of it is to examine the effect of reading education with the cases of reading activity conducted by elementary school baseball club players and provide foundational material for reading education targeting school sport club players. To attain the goal, the researcher provided a variety of reading instruction from October, 2010 till February, 2014 to baseball club players at O Elementary School located in A City of Chungcheongnam-do while conducting qualitative research with participatory and non-participatory observation and also topic-based group interviewing. For the data collection and analysis, ‘topic-based group interviewing’ suggested by Morgan (2002) and open coding, axial coding, and selective coding developed by Strauss and Corbin (1998) were employed. And inter-member examination, multilateral approaches, and expert consultation were also utilized to enhance reliability. According to the study findings, elementary school baseball club players’ reading activities are practiced through first, changing baseball club coaches and parents’ recognition, second, securing reading places and diverse books, third, having a reading habit from lower grades, fourth, the day for everyone’s reading, and fifth, connecting it to the local library. According to the findings of this study, reading education for school sport club players has the following effects: first, it helps students to have a habit of reading, second, it improves their athletic performance and insight to the event they are involved in, third, it promotes their cognitive development and basic learning ability, fourth, to realize emotional education and introspection, and fifth, it motivates them to read through specialized instruction.

본 연구는 학교 운동부 선수들을 위한 독서 교육 사례연구로서, 초등학교 야구부 선수들의 독서 활동 사례를 중심으로 독서 교육의 효과를 밝힘으로써 학교 운동부 선수들을 위한 독서 교육에 자료를 제공하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 충청남도 A시 O초등학교 야구부 선수들에게 2010년 10월부터 2014년 2월까지 다양한 방법으로 독서를 지도하면서 참여 관찰 및 비참여 관찰, 주제별 집단면담, 전문가 회의를 통한 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 자료 수집과 분석 과정은 Morgan(2002)이 제시하고 있는 ‘주제별 집단면담’과 Strauss와 Corbin(1998)이 개발한 개방적 코딩, 중추적 코딩, 선택적 코딩으로 자료를 분석하였으며, 구성원간 검토, 다각도 접근법, 전문가 협의를 통해 진실성을 높이고자 하였다. 연구의 결과 초등학교 야구부 선수들의 독서 활동 사례로는 첫째, 코치와 학부모들의 인식 전환, 둘째, 읽기터 및 다양한 도서 확보, 셋째, 저학년 때부터 독서의 습관화, 넷째, 모두가 책 읽는 날, 다섯째, 지역 도서관과의 연계를 통해 실천하였다. 학교 운동부 선수들을 위한 독서 교육의 효과로는 첫째, 독서의 생활화를 통한 습관화, 둘째, 경기력 향상 및 해당 종목에 대한 안목 함양, 셋째, 인지 발달 및 기초 학습 능력 신장, 넷째, 감성 교육 및 자아성찰, 다섯째, 전문적 지도를 통한 독서 동기 유발로 도출되었다.
