This study analyzes the process of how interest in physical education among elementary school teachers is formed throughout their childhood, elementary school years, middle school years, high school years, university years, 0-5 years of job experience, 6-10 years of job experience, 11-15 years of job experience and 16-20 years of job experience. The purpose of the study is to investigate the factors that lead to the formation of such interest. In order to meet the study purpose, five elementary school teachers in region D were selected as subjects. Questionnaires, storyline and in-depth interviews were used to collect data which was then analyzed inductively. In order to verify the data, peer review and discussion as well as discussion with experts were used. The findings of the study are as follows: First, elementary school teachers had experienced the process of their interest in physical education being formed in their childhood, elementary school, middle school, high school, university and also at their workplace as teachers. Second, the positive and negative factors that influence the formation of interest in physical education are as follows; for positive factors, experience in various physical activities, participation of others, exclusively handling physical education-related tasks, studies in graduate programs or participation in research activities were mentioned. Among negative factors were included a decrease in the number of classes for physical education, passively instructed physical education classes, physical punishment, students’ reluctance to join the school’s sport clubs, pressure to enhance performance of sport students at the school, decrease in opportunity for physical education and the experience of discrimination. Suggestions are as follows: first, a curriculum that fits the revised education curricula should be applied and operated to normalize physical education at elementary schools. Second, in order to form a more positive mindset towards physical education among elementary school students, more opportunities for them to improve their expertise in the field must be provided. Third, efforts need to be made to remove the negative factors that influence the formation of interest in physical education.

본 연구는 초등학교 교사들의 체육교육에 대한 관심 형성 과정을 유년기, 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교, 대학교, 교직경력 0~5년, 교직경력 6~10년, 교직경력 11~15년, 교직경력 16~20년 등으로 분석해 봄으로써 초등 교사들의 체육교육에 대한 관심 형성 요인을 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위하여 D지역 초등 교사 5명으로 연구 참여자를 선정하였으며, 자료 수집 방법은 질문지, 스토리라인, 심층면담으로, 자료 분석은 귀납적 분석법을, 자료의 진실성 확보를 위하여 구성원간 검토, 동료간 협의, 전문가 협의를 이용하였다. 본 연구 결과는 첫째, 초등학교 교사들은 유년시절, 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교, 대학교, 현장교사 시절에 다양한 체육 관심 형성 과정을 경험하고 있었다. 둘째, 체육교육에 대한 관심 형성에 영향을 미치는 긍정적․부정적 요인은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 긍정적 요인은 다양한 체육에 대한 경험, 체육의 관심 형성에 중요한 타자, 체육업무 전담, 대학원 진학 및 각종 연구대회 참여이고, 부정적 요인은 체육수업 감소 및 아나공 수업, 체벌, 학교운동부 기피 및 실적 부담감, 체육교육에 대한 기회 감소 및 차별 경험이다. 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개정 교육과정에 맞는 교육과정 적용 및 운영으로 초등 체육교육 정상화를 이뤄야 한다. 둘째, 초등 교사들의 체육 교육에 대한 긍정적 마인드 형성을 위해 다양한 전문성 기회를 제공해야 한다. 셋째, 체육 교육 관심 형성의 부정적 요인을 제거하기 위한 노력이 필요하다.
