This study examined the writing method of heroic novel mainly through comparison with full-length novel . Through the work, this study confirmed that was written with main characters and some episodes borrowed from . On the other hand, however, bore quite a different aesthetic sense while accommodating , and the difference was attained mainly through type conversion to a heroic novel. In other words, was born again as a heroic novel through the unification of the central character and the adoption of narratives of early heroic novels such as and . Moreover, the military stories developing continuously even after Hyeon Su-mun became a commander and a minister emphasize that the change of dynasty by a foreign people was ordained by Heaven. Such a positive view to the change of dynasty is a unique feature of hardly found in other classical novels. Moreover, this study suggested the possibility that the writer of might have constructed the novel based on popular novels in those days in order to mitigate the readers’ antipathy against the radical narratives on the change of dynasty by a foreign people or against the foreignness of the people.

본고는 영웅소설 <현수문전>의 창작방식을 대장편소설인 <현씨양웅쌍린기>와의 관련성을 중심으로 살피고자 한 것이다. 그 결과, <현수문전>은 <현씨양웅쌍린기>의 주요 인물들과 몇몇 사건들을 차용하여 작품의 서사를 구성하는 한편, 중심인물의 단일화와 당대 영웅소설의 서사 수용, 그리고 군담의 확대 등을 통해 영웅소설로의 유형 변환을 꾀하고 있었다. 더불어, <현수문전>은 현수문이 출장입상한 이후에도 지속적으로 전개되는 군담을 통해 결국은 이민족의 왕조교체에 대한 긍정적 시각을 표출하고 있었는데, 이러한 시각은 여타의 고소설 작품에서는 찾아보기 힘든 것이다. 따라서 본고는 지금까지의 논의를 바탕으로 <현수문전>의 작가가 이민족에 의한 왕조교체라는 급진적 서사가 주는 반감이나 이질감 완화를 위한 방편으로써 <현씨양웅쌍린기>를 비롯한 당대의 인기 소설들을 수용했을 가능성을 제기하였다.
