The purpose of this study was to investigate appreciative inquiry(AI) and how the process of AI could be applied to counseling. For this purpose, the theoretical foundation for AI, which involved its meanings and characteristics, differences from a problem-solving approach, positive psychology and social construction, and philosophy and principles of changes, was discussed to help understand what perspective it took. A 4-D cycle model with four phases - discovery, dream, design, and destiny - was examined as a more specific intervention model to implement such a theoretical foundation and some examples of how counseling could be based on this 4-D cycle model were presented. It was noted, therefore, that the AI process could be useful in counseling like WDEP, which is a counseling process for reality therapy, and that it could be a useful framework in presenting a theoretical basis and method for counseling based on clients' strengths since it is consistent with positive psychology.

본 논문은 긍정탐구(AI)란 무엇이며, AI의 과정이 상담에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는가를 탐색한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 AI란 어떤 관점인가를 이해하는 데에 도움이 되는 그 이론적 기반이라 할 수 있는 AI의 특성과 문제해결 접근과의 차이점, 이론적 토대인 긍정심리학과 사회적 구성주의, 그리고 변화에 대한 철학과 원리에 대해 고찰하였다. 이러한 이론적 기반을 실천하기 위한 보다 구체적인 개입 모델이라 할 수 있는 발견(Discovery) → 꿈(Dream) → 설계(Design) → 결행(Destiny)의 4단계로 이루어지는 AI의 과정인 4-D 사이클 모델을 살펴보고, 이러한 4-D 사이클 모델에 입각하여 상담이 어떻게 이루어질 수 있는가를 예시하였다. 그리하여 AI의 과정이 상담과정에 활용될 수 있고, 긍정심리학과 맥락을 같이 하기 때문에 내담자의 강점기반 상담을 위한 이론적 기초와 방법을 제시할 수 있는 하나의 유용한 틀이 될 수 있다는 것을 제안하였다.
