An old prefinal ending morpheme {-sɔp-} has been one of the most studied morphemes in the literature of historical linguistics on Korean. So its grammatical function has been uncovered to the extent almost everyone agrees on, that is, the subject’s action becomes humble toward the object or the goal of the action. As the academic foci moved on to the 17th century materials, speech-level systems started to grab attentions with regard to this morpheme for its function has changed into expressing politeness of the speaker toward the addressee. Then many other topics on the morpheme has surfaced in the literature and under research: formal fusion and coalescence with other morphemes so to form a new ending or a verb; the change of its grammatical category and the order in terms of the distance from the stem it attaches to; the list of its allomorphs and the variation; and nowadays the conditions a speaker would have used the morpheme, viz, the pragmatics of the morpheme.

{-ㅅ.ㅂ-}은 국어사 연구에서 가장 많이 다루어진 형태소 가운데 하나인 만큼 다양한 측면들이 밝혀져 있다. 특히 후기 중세국어까지의 {-ㅅ.ㅂ-}이 ‘객체를 향한 주체의 행동을 겸손하게 표현하는 용법’을 가진다는 점에 대해서는 결정적 반론이 없다고 할 수 있다. 국어사 연구의 관심이 중세국어 자료에서 17세기 자료로 옮겨가면서 자연스럽게 {-ㅅ.ㅂ-}과 화계의 연관성이 탐구되었는데, 17세기에 들어 {-ㅅ.ㅂ-}의 용법이 화청자 사이의 관계를 나타내는 쪽으로 변했기 때문이다. 이후에는 {-ㅅ.ㅂ-}에 대한 연구 주제가 더욱 다양해져서, {-ㅅ.ㅂ-}의 기원, 이형태의 음성・ 음운론적인 측면, 다른 형태소들과의 형식적 융합, 기능 변화에 따른 통합관계 변화, 화용론적인 사용 조건 등 언어학의 거의 모든 측면에서 탐구되고 있다.
