This paper attempts to reach a deeper understanding of the prefinal endinggeo by identifying significant points of debate and thereby reviewing theaccomplishments of previous studies of geo. The following are the 7 points ofdebate considered important in previous studies of geo. 1. In medieval Korean, to what extent does geo have allomorph? 2. In medieval Korean, what are the morphemes in paradigmatic relation withgeo? 3. How is the coexistence of “geosi(-거시-)” and “sigeo(-시거-)” in MedievalKorean to be understood? 4. Can geo in “geoden(-거든), geonel(-거늘), geonmaran(-건마), geoni(-거니), geona(-거나), geojila(-거지라), geola(-거라), geot(-것-)” be the objectsof analysis in geo studies? 5. What is the function of geo in Medieval Korean? 6. Is the final ending geo in particular situations the same kind of morphemeas the prefinal ending geo? 7. What is the function of geo in Old Korean?After reviewing how previous studies answer these questions, this paper offersits own answers in the conclusion. As far as alternation is concerned, alternationdue to transitivity is acknowledged. The function of geo is explained basicallyfrom the perspective of “perfect aspect.” When it comes to the functions of geoin imperative or conditional phrases, it is possible to explain them by extendingthe meanings of geo or by using other categories of meaning. This essay alsoexpounds geo in final ending by considering how it is historically related to the prefinal ending geo.

이 논문의 목적은 선어말어미 {-거-}와 관련한 쟁점과 연구 성과를 정리하고 이 과정에서 선어말어미 {-거-}에 대하여 이해하고자 하는 것이다. 선행연구에서 추출한 쟁점을 모두 7개의 물음으로 제시하였다. ① 중세국어 {-거-}의 이형태(allomorph)는 어디까지인가? ② 중세국어 {-거-}와 계열관계에 있는 형태소는 무엇인가? ③ 중세국어 ‘-거시-’와 ‘-시거-’의 공존을 어떻게 볼 것인가? ④ 중세국어 ‘-거든’, ‘-거늘’, ‘-건마 ’, ‘-거니’, ‘-거나’, ‘-거지라’, ‘-거라’ ‘-것-’ 등에서 {-거-}를 분석할 수 있는가? ⑤ 중세국어 {-거-}의 기능은 무엇인가? ⑥ 특정 환경의 어말어미 ‘거’와 선어말어미 ‘거’는 같은 형태소인가? ⑦ 고대국어 {-거-}의 기능은 무엇인가?2장에서 각 물음에 대하여 선행 연구에서 어떻게 답하였는지를 정리하였고 이를 바탕으로 결론에서 필자의 견해를 반영하여 답을 제시하였다. 교체는 [타동성(transitivity)]에 따른 교체를 인정하였고 기능은 기본적으로 ‘완료상’의 관점에서 기능을 설명하였다. 다만 명령형 및 조건절에 나타나는 ‘거’의 기능을 설명하는 것은 의미의 확대 내지는 다른 의미 범주를 이용한 설명이 가능하다고 설명하였다. 그리고 어말어미 환경에 나타났던 ‘거’를 선어말어미 {-거-}와 역사적으로 연관지어 설명하고자 하였다.
