The purpose of this study is to shed new light on the research of teachers’ awareness and responses toward unexpected situations that is occur in physical education. This study consists of qualitative research on three teachers with different work experience, one P.E. instructor, and three sixth grade classes at K elementary school in S city. From the observation, unexpected situations in physical education can be roughly separated into three categories: (1) situations caused by students, (2) situations caused by teachers, and (3) situations caused by the environment. For the first category, situations caused by students, the main factors are the students’ understanding of the subject content, their attitude towards teachers, and their relations among their peers. Next, in situations caused by teachers, the main factors are the teachers’ class preparation, background knowledge and the generation gap. Lastly, the main factors of situations caused by the environment are lesson materials and class location. Whatever caused the unexpected situations, teachers show different responses depending on their work experience, background knowledge, and class perception. In situations caused by students, teachers with less teaching experience try to solve problems with communication and persuasion, while teachers with more experience try to solve a problem with physical training and factor eliminations. This difference shows that more experienced teachers value efficiency and effectiveness more than less experienced teachers. In situations caused by teachers, each instructor shows different reactions according to their own personal characteristics. In situations caused by the environment, more experienced teachers are able to change lesson plans when needed more than less experienced teachers. However, teachers need to better understand the younger generation’s trends, especially when regarding unresponsive students.

본 연구는 체육수업 중 예측하지 못한 상황에 대한 교사의 인식과 반응을 탐구하는 것을 연구의 목적으로 하고 있다. 이를 위해 경력별 교사 3명과 스포츠강사 1인, S시에 위치하는 K초등학교 6학년 3개 학급을 대상으로 질적 연구를 실시하였다. 연구의 결과 교사들이 인식하는 수업 중 예측하지 못한 상황들은 크게 학생이 주체가 된 상황, 교사가 주체가 된 상황, 환경이 주체가 된 상황으로 나눌 수 있었다. 주체별 상황을 정리하여 보면 학생주체 요인은 수업내용에 대한 이해, 교사를 대하는 학생들의 태도, 학생들 간의 관계로 유목화 시킬 수 있었다. 교사주체 요인은 수업 준비, 개인적 배경 지식, 세대 차이에 의해 발생되고 있었다. 환경이 주체가 된 상황으로는 수업 매체와 수업 장소의 문제로 분석 되었다. 예측하지 못한 상황에 대한 교사의 반응은 교육경력이나 체육 수업과 관련된 지식, 체육 수업에 대한 인식의 정도에 따라 차이를 보여 주었다. 학생 주체 요인에 의한 교사 반응은 저 경력 교사일수록 대화나 설득의 방법을 사용해 상황을 극복하였고, 고 경력 교사일수록 신체적 단련이나 수업 배제의 방법을 택함으로서 학생주체 요인으로 발생한 예측하지 못한 상황을 극복하고 있었다. 이는 저 경력 교사보다 고 경력 교사가 인식된 상황의 극복에 있어서 효과성과 효율성을 중시하고 있음을 보여준다. 교사가 주체가 된 상황의 반응에 있어서는 연구 참여자들의 특성에 따라 각기 다른 반응을 보여 주었다. 특히 세대 차이로 인해 발생한 학생 무반응에 대해서는 교사가 좀 더 학생 세대에 대한 이해와 시대적 유행에 관심을 가질 필요가 있었다. 환경이 주체가 된 원인에서는 계획된 수업의 변경으로 반응하였으며 이러한 현상은 주로 고 경력 교사에게서 나타났다.
