This study examined Park Se-dang's historical consciousness by deepening a consideration on history, which had failed to be perfectly established over the whole of Joseon as well as history in Injo Dynasty of the 17th century. Joseon was formed the stability in royal authority and the prosperity in culture superficially in the relatively short time compared to the Three States and Goryeo, which are the history of previous generation. Especially to reinforce and maintain royal authority, it ever borrowed power of Ming Dynasty in early days. The history was formed while strengthening or weakening a clique politically with getting over the middle phase. The royal authority and the political power in Joseon came to head for a ruin owing to a conflict on legitimacy of royal authority in the times of reaching king Danjong, king Sejo, king Seonjo, Gwanghaegun(Prince Gwanghae), and king Injo. The incomplete royal succession, which was enthroned by coup and anti-politics(反正), led directly to a problem about legitimacy of royal authority and is also a direct opportunity of being weakened sovereign power. Even what this study has its focus on the sequence of events during the period of seizing power in king Injo is because the period of being clearly this problem is the Injo Dynasty. Issues at home and abroad, which come to take place in the period of confusion, are shown to be contrary tendency depending on perspective of looking at history. It grasped the circumstances at home and abroad focusing on the period of seizing power in king Injo when confusion had reached its climax, figured out the historical consciousness of Park Se-dang, who aimed to focus on profit rather than justification and on the present rather than the past with regard to it, and also closely examined the truth of seeking the legitimacy on history of Joseon Dynasty that intellects have in the 17th century.

본고는 17세기 인조조의 역사는 물론이거니와 조선 전반에 걸쳐 완전하게 정립되지 못했던 역사에 대한 고찰을 심화하여 박세당의 역사인식을 살폈다. 조선은 전대의 역사인 삼국과 고려에 비해 표면적으로는 비교적 짧은 시간에 왕권이 안정되고 문화의 융성이 이루어졌다. 특히 왕권의 강화와 유지를 위해 초기에는 명나라의 힘을 빌리기도 하였고, 중반을 넘어서면서 정치적으로 붕당의 세력을 강화 또는 약화시키기도 하면서 역사가 이루어졌다. 단종, 세조, 선조, 광해군, 인조에 이르는 시기에는 왕권의 정통성 문제에 대한 갈등으로 조선의 왕권과 정치력이 파국을 치닫게 되었다. 쿠데타와 반정으로 옹립된 불완전한 왕위계승은 왕권의 정통성 문제와 직결되었고, 왕권의 약화에 직접적인 계기이기도 하다. 본고에서 이번 연구의 중심에 인조 집권기 일련의 사건 두고 있는 것도 이러한 문제가 극명하게 나타나는 시기가 인조조이기 때문이다. 혼란의 시기에 발생하게 되는 국내외의 문제는 역사를 바라보는 관점에 따라 상반된 경향으로 나타난다. 혼란이 극에 달했던 인조 집권기를 중심으로 국내외 정황을 파악하고 그에 관련하여 명분보다는 실리를, 과거보다는 현재를 중심에 두고자 했던 박세당의 역사인식을 살폈고, 아울러 17세기 지식인이 갖는 조선조 역사에 대해 정통성 찾기의 실체를 구명하였다.
